My dog is red all over after vaccination. What should I do now?

You can see a mild fever after vaccines, and that could be the cause of Jack's shaking. Benadryl will not help with that if he has a fever. Keep an eye on him, and if the shaking continues for more than 24 hours or he develops other signs such as persistent vomiting and diarrhea, hives, swelling of the muzzle, and/or difficulty breathing, take him into a vet immediately. A swollen face, swollen lips, red eyes, severe itching or difficulty breathing may all be symptoms of a vaccine reaction. An antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), can be given but only under the advice of your veterinary. Legally, we are prohibited from recommending you medicate her in the absence of a physical exam and a VPCR (veterinarian-patient-client relationship). If her symptoms persist or worsen, have her examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.

It could be the start of a reaction or he could simply be frightening from the process. You can try a dose of children benadryl to see if that helps Titan. If he does not calm down, stop shaking, has vomiting or dirrhoea I would advise taking him back to the vet immediately.

While this may be a reaction to the vaccines, I would not recommend that you give her Benadryl without having her physically evaluated by a veterinarian. It is only dangerous if the swelling is causing her to have difficulty breathing. Getting her to a vet is the best option but if you want to try something at home you can give Benadryl by mouth at 1mg per pound of body weight (example, if she is 25 pounds, she would get 25 mg). Always let the vet know when she is vaccinated in the future that she had a previous reaction.

If the symptom does not go away or worsens, then I would take her in to be seen if possible. Reactions are temporary and will eventually go away (either on their own or with the help of medication). Reactions can be quite severe sometimes so be on the lookout for severe facial swelling, hive development, extreme lethargy, vomiting, breathing difficulty, etc. and get her in to be seen by an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. Otherwise, if she is normal right now with none of the above symptoms, I would just monitor her after giving the Benadryl and see how she does. I hope this helps! Your dog should get an antihistamine before the vaccination. You should ask your vet about giving him a diphenhydramine , or chlorpheniramine injection about an hour before getting the vaccination. This should avoid the reaction or at least reduce the impact. Your veterinarian should have these injectables available.
