How to prevent dog vaccine reactions like swelling and itchiness?

A swollen face, swollen lips, red eyes, severe itching or difficulty breathing may all be symptoms of a vaccine reaction. An antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), can be given but only under the advice of your veterinary. Legally, we are prohibited from recommending you medicate her in the absence of a physical exam and a VPCR (veterinarian-patient-client relationship). If her symptoms persist or worsen, have her examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.

It is only dangerous if the swelling is causing her to have difficulty breathing. Getting her to a vet is the best option but if you want to try something at home you can give Benadryl by mouth at 1mg per pound of body weight (example, if she is 25 pounds, she would get 25 mg). Always let the vet know when she is vaccinated in the future that she had a previous reaction.

Poor guy. It sounds like he may be having a mild reaction to the vaccine. I would contact your vet to get him an antihistamine shot to help relieve the itch. He may also benefit from oral allergy medication for a few days until things subside. If you can't get him in right away, you can try an over the counter pet formulated aloe based or oatmeal based shampoo (one with Diphenhydramine is best if available) to help alleviate some of the irritation. Hello. It is possible that your puppy is having a reaction. If it is not terribly bad, it should subside in 24 hours. However, if it is getting worse, your puppy develops diarrhea or any difficulty breathing, please see your vet. And, you might want to consider having your vet administer the next set of shots. If Frankie has never had a vaccine reaction in the past I wouldn't expect him to have one this time.
