My dog has a red, scabby, sensitive eye. Should I take him to the vet?

Poor Gomez! From the picture, he has bletharitis- inflammation of the eyelid. I would recommend that you take him to a veterinarian. They will do an exam and try to find out the cause. They might do diagnostics such as cytology to see if infected. After that- they will give you meds that are safe for the eye area! Good Luck! If she has been scratching more than usual and scratching at that area, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, it would be fair to wait a bit to see if it resolves on its own. In that case, if no improvement is noted within 4-5 days, have her evaluated by a veterinarian then. Best of luck!

It is possible that Ganja has something like an infection or perhaps a sty on the eyelid. It sounds like the lesion is getting worse. Sometimes the body will heal this on its own, if it ruptures or you notice continuous oozing, pain or excess of redness, have her examined by the veterinarian. If it does not go away completely within a few days, also have her examined by the veterinarian. Protect the area from rubbing or scratching with an Elizabethan collar. You can gently apply a warm, not hot, compress to the area twice a day. This may help. It’s always best to play it safe so use your best judgment. The red spot on the outside lower lid looks like a scratch or abrasions that will leave a scab. It is best to get it seen by a vet as antibiotics that are safe for the eye may be needed to clear the eyelids and the scab. Allergies may the starting cause and the more he rubs it, the worse it may get. You can try some benadryl to help with redness and the itching. Apply a warm compress and flushing the eye with saline eye wash may also help provide comfort.

It looks as though Mickey could possibly be dealing with a skin infection or skin mites. I would recommend you take him to your veterinarian for a workup of this to diagnose it appropriately so that the most effective treatment can be prescribed. Mickey will likely need to go on a course of oral antibiotics and a topical ointment to treat this if it is a skin infection and if it is skin mites (demodex) he would need to go on a course of a medication that kills the mites. Poor Benny! The redness and drooping of his eye could be due to an eye infection, injury to his eye, or allergies. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it is an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. This is a very abnormal looking eye and it appears that your dog has some serious issues with the cornea. The cornea is very cloudy and hazy and the pink lesion looks like a large ulcer on the cornea. This eye is likely chronically dry and lacking in tear production. This eye looks like it is in imminent danger of rupturing. I would recommend that you take your pet to the closest emergency clinic if you are unable to get help from a regular daytime vet right away. Your pet should be seen immediately and it is not a good idea to wait for 7 days. Your pet will likely need multiple prescription eye medications and possibly surgery in order to repair the defect. Please do not try to treat this without a proper diagnosis and proper medication.
