Dog has red mark after hike. Is it a tick bite or insect sting?

This doesn't look like a tick bite, more likely a wasp or bee sting that Milo may have scratched. Please clean it with antibacterial soap, rinse it well, dry the area then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. You can also put a little bit of cortisone cream on it to prevent itching. Please use a restraint collar is needed to prevent Milo from licking it. If it gets bigger, painful or Milo becomes lethargic and not eating then I would recommend a veterinary visit. Not all tick bites will cause disease, so just watch over the next 10 -14 days any signs of illness in Tobi. This would include lethargy, loss of appetite, reddened eyes. Take care.

Thank you for the picture of Chipper's lesion. It appears to be a black fly bite. These lesions from the bite look bad, but typically they do not bother the pet. You don't need to do anything to treat it, these usually go away on their own over time. That being said, if this doesn't improve over the next week, it looks worse, or he's constantly itching it, then he will need to see a vet. I hope this helps!

Poor Kato! I hope this bite is not bothering him too much. It looks like what we see with black fly bites. Whilst humans can get the 'bullseye' lesion with a tick bite that is not usually something we see with dogs. I would monitor the area for any worsening of the symptoms. You could apply a cool compress if it seems inflamed or itchy. Take Kato to see your regular veterinarian if other lesions develop or he seems to feel unwell.

Hi there, These look very similar in appearance to black fly bites, which look very dramatic but are truly benign. These are often worst in Spring and Fall seasons. If Pesci is allergic, you would see: facial swelling, full body hives, and severe vomit or diarrhea. This would be a sign he needs emergency medical care. That may be a black fly bite. If that is the case, it should not be itchy (normally), should not bother Lily and should resolve on its own without treatment. If the area is becoming swollen, enlarging or appearing to spread, then Lily should see your veterinarian. Keep the area clean and dry. You can use a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution to clean the area daily. Tick bites frequently result in a red, raised area (tick bite granuloma) after the tick drops off or is removed. The good news is that they resolve on their own within a few weeks. Resume Iggy's tick prevention and perform tick checks after being outdoors.
