My dog has red lumps and a scabby wound. Should I take him to the vet?

I would have panda examined by a vet. A wound like this could be caused by skin infection, ringworm, mange mites, chronic licking from allergies or pain in the foot, etc. The vet will look closely at his skin and may take a small sample to examine under the microscope. Then they can prescribe an appropriate treatment once the cause is known.

This sounds like he may have gotten into an ant nest or have a secondary skin infection from an allergic reaction. I recommend a veterinary exam and probably antibiotics to heal this skin infection. In the mean time you can bathe Browny in a medicated shampoo and apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the sores he can't reach to lick. Your veterinarian can also give medication to reduce the itch and inflammation. This sounds painful also so please take him in soon for treatment. This can be caused by a localized skin infection, an infestation with mites or fleas, or even an allergic reaction. It is likely that these conditions may be causing Hump to be itchy, and she may be having these scabs from scratching. A vet can perform some tests including blood work, and taking some samples from Hump's skin to figure out what is going on and prescribe an appropriate treatment plan. I hope this helps!

Signs of infection include redness, swelling, pain, discharge, and loss of function so if you notice this getting worse or other signs develop, take him back to have him re-evaluated. You can use some topical Neosporin or similar antibiotic ointment on the incision. Just make sure if doesn't contain hydrocortisone or a steroid. Good luck

This looks like a bacterial skin infection (folliculitis) that will likely require antibiotic therapy. Another possibility is mange mites which would require a different treatment. It looks like Bruno has a skin infection. Parasites like mites and fleas can cause irritation of the skin that can lead to bacterial infections. If he has not had skin scrapings performed to look for mites, that would be my recommendation. If there are no mites, and he has been treated for fleas, then perhaps the topical medications he is on are not enough, and he needs an oral antibiotic to control the infection. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These could potentially represent nodules or masses that have become ulcerated. They could also be just focal patches of dermatitis. I recommend that you have Bella evaluated by your veterinarian. This is most of the time differentiated with a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have Bella evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined. If it does not appear to be a mass on examination, they can at least do cytology of the superficial aspect and see if infected and prescribe antibiotics for it. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is something benign!
