My dog has red crusty spots and black pigments. Is it ringworm?

You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!

It’s uncommon for older dogs to get ringworm, and when they do it’s generally on the face. This area may have started to itch and she got it red and irritated from licking. I would clean the area with a medicated shampoo that kills both bacteria and yeast. Then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. In addition use a cone if she’s licking the area. If you wash your hands well after touching her you shouldn’t get anything. If it’s not healing or there are other areas then please take her in for an exam and skin tests to determine if it’s ringworm or infection. It doesn't really look like a ringworm but it is hard to be sure without examining Penny in person. Please, take all the precautions you would if it was ringworm (use gloves or wash your hand after touching the area) and take Penny to your local vets tomorrow.

Hello there. Thank you for using PetCoach and thank you for including photos. My best guess is that this is ringworm. It does not look like a bite. I suggest you get Molekin' to your vet for an exam and to get a proper diagnosis for two reasons. Number one, ringworm is contagious to people and number two, an adult dog that gets ringworm usually has an underlying problem with their immune system. An adult dog should not get it. This is much more common in puppies. Remember, it is impossible for me to diagnose over the internet with just a photo. I am just giving my best guess. Many skin diseases look similar to the naked eye so that is why testing is important. It may take 2+ months for it to clear completely up but you should start noticing a difference in a .couple weeks. If you don't have any improvement in 2 weeks or it worsens then you definitely need to get him to the vet. Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Poor Maggie! I think the 2 most possible causes are ring worm (though I agree not classic in appearance) or a skin infection. You can start bathing Maggie in a medicated shampoo. Bathe 2-3 times per week and leave the later on for 10 mins before rinsing. You can do that until your appointment next week. They look like they could be ringworm, which is a fungus that infects the skin and causes patchy round area of redness and hairloss. Often a topical antifungal shampoo or cream will help treat this, however in some cases oral antifungal medication may be needed. I recommend monitoring Rocco's response to the treatments that your veterinarian prescribed, and have him evaluated again if signs worsen or do not start to improve within a week! Hi there-it sounds as if Bentley could have ringworm, a fungal infection. These are usually easily treated by Medicated shampoos and oral antifungals, as long as there are no complicating factors. Your vet can do a culture for this and get you squared away pretty quickly! Hope this helps.
