My dog has skin sores, vet prescribed meds, but unsure of cause. Help?

The anti-fungal medications can sometimes take several days to a week or so to see a dramatic improvement so if Ruckas just started the treatment, I would give it a good week. After another week and you still do not see any improvement, you may revisit with Ruckas's veterinarian to discuss other causes such as a bacterial infection or perhaps due to a seasonal allergy or food allergy as a cause for the skin lesions. For relief of the itching / discomfort, you can use a product called Sentry Hydrocortisone spray which can be found at Petco. I also like using Pramosoothe spray, which can be found online. These products can be applied 2-3 times per day to help with the relief. I would try and find out why Rocco is so prone to the allergies though to help with the overall problem rather than masking the symptoms of the problem. If this is a year round issue, he may have a disease called Atopic Dermatitis, which can be treated but can be difficult and expensive to manage. I would also recommend Welactin Omega 3 fish oil capsules. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I would recommend bringing Rocco to a veterinarian. It is hard to definitely say what is going on with Rocco without a physical examination. This could be a skin infection that he is making worse by scratching at it. If it is a skin infection your veterinarian will prescribe antibiotics and potentially a medicated shampoo. It is hard to say exactly what caused the itchiness but most common is allergies. Your veterinarian can discuss different causes and ways we can try to stop this from happening again. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a skin infection. Although in theory possible, ringworm seems unlikely. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Favio! I think Favio needs a recheck. Ring worm and mites are possible. Your Vet would have to do a skin scrape to look for mites under the microscope. There are 2 types of mites in dogs 1) demodex (non-contagious mite that normally lives on the skin but can over grow in a puppy with an immature immune system) 2) scabies (contagious mite from other dogs or foxes). Ring worm is diagnoses by using a Wood's lamp and then by doing a fungal culture. At a minimum he may need a longer course of antibiotics and something to relieve the scratching (prednisone with or with out an antihistamine). I hope this helps and I wish Favio a speedy recovery!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Rocco! Your pictures look like a deep pyoderma (skin infection). To try and treat at home I would use a medicated shampoo that contains benzoyl peroxide once daily on the shin and then apply mupirocin ointment on it twice daily. You can google this ointment and find it online. If it doesn't get better Rocco should see a Vet for oral antibiotics. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Without a fungal culture, it is very difficult to definitively diagnose ringworm. There are a lot of skin issues that can look red, crusty or flaky & not all of them will be ringworm. Using a combination of antifungal & antibacterial products is a great idea. For any shampoo, make sure the lather stays on the skin for at least 10 minutes before rinsing. If there is no improvement after about 3 weeks, or the skin lesions get worse, please have your veterinarian examine them
