My mini Aussie's eyes get red and bloodshot at night. Is it serious?

From your description and the pictures, this may be an eye infection, trauma to the eye or allergies. Terramycin ophthalmic ointment is one antibiotic ointment that we do use to treat eye infections. I would say that this is safe to use but if the eye is worsening or is no better during or after the course of treatment, I would recommend having Pat examined by a veterinarian. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, uveitis, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. Although a picture would help to determine underlying cause of it more specifically, that is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to an allergy or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh goodness! Poor Paris! Sadly Paris needs to see a Vet for her eye. A painful red eye needs immediate Veterinary care. Possible causes are: a corneal ulcer, infection, allergies, trauma, inflammation or glaucoma. There are specific medications that are safe for the eye and she needs a diagnosis first. Infectious conjunctivitis is not common in dogs and unless she is going to doggie day care or is in contact with many dogs it is unlikely that she has contracted an infection twice. More likely would be allergic conjunctivitis or another eye disease like anterior uveitis. I would recommend rechecking with your veterinarian first. If they see anything unusual they may recommend referral to an ophthalmologist.

This sounds unusual, it is definitely not normal. Without seeing what the eye looks like when it is puffy and inflamed it is hard to tell what's going on. In the picture you provided the eyes look normal. I would recommend taking your dog to the vet to have his eyes checked out to make sure there is nothing too serious going on. He may simply have some allergies and need to be on an antihistamine in the evenings to prevent his eyes from becoming irritated and swollen.

There is a red spot in his eye, indicating blood, and you need to be sure there is no damage to the cornea itself. The vet can do this at an appointment. Please take him into one in the morning.
