My dog ignores me in new places. How to improve recall & reduce nervousness?

Taking Mina to a group obedience training class can get her used to going fun places and help her relax around other people and dogs. Being able to redirect her behavior from anxiety to performing sit, down and heeling can give them confidence and reduce anxiety. I also like to use the supplement Solliquin for anxiety especially when I'm working on improving this behavior. Usually if your friends ignore her and don't make eye contact then when they are sitting in your home she may come investigate them on her own. This behavior can get worse if you force her to meet people and do things that increase her anxiety. Be patient, changing this behavior takes time and it's often a result of her insecurity so having her learn new things, go new places and get praise and treats for good behavior will make her a more confident and relaxed dog. This type of behavior is not unusual. Olive is likely watching out for any 'intruders' and she is protecting her territory. It will help to work on the recall command. It sounds like two different things might be going on: overexcitement and potentially leash aggression. To me it doesn’t sound like Bruce is timid or anxious around other dogs and new places, but rather that he is really really excited to be out and about. The attacking fences where there are other dogs could be a sign of leash aggression. There are things to do to help - you should start by working with basic commands at home - ask him to either sit or make eye contact at home, then start practicing with him on a leash and when there is a minor distraction around. Gradually work up to going outside in a quiet area. If you’re struggling an obedience class might help, or you could also ask your vet for a referral to a behaviorist.

It certainly sounds like anxiety to me - it sounds like your dog is fearful around new people and dogs. I'd recommend talking to a behaviorist or trusted trainer about working on some behavior modification that could help your dog feel more confident in new situations. Ask your vet who they would recommend in your area.

Hi there. It sounds like Bea is having some trouble with her focus. While much of that is just being young and full of energy, I feel you would benefit from clicker training (a treat and reward system) as well as a well organized puppy class. Puppy classes are often offered at your local pet smart as well as through several trainers as help puppies to develop a sense of ability to socialize without being distracted enough by their surrounds that they ignore their owner. To many puppies-they see this as an exciting time to meet new friends and play with their owners. For us it is a wonderful area to help the puppies feel safe and bond with us over respect and learn boundaries. She is likely just reacting to stimuli (things she doesn't often get to see) and doesn't realize she's being "bad" as well as being full of energy. This will take a lot of patience and treats on your part when she performs or listens to you. She will get there, it is just a learning process.

Using a "watch me" command and a high value treat (something super delicious that Misty really enjoys, like a small amount of hot dog or cheese, that she only gets when she responds to this particular command) can be helpful in these situations See the link below for more information: https://www.embracepetinsurance.com/waterbowl/article/watch-me-command While she is learning, keep her on a training leash to help keep her safe. Don't use a retractable leash, as this could lead to injury when it retracts and does not offer you enough control.

I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and her in person to really take care of this behavior.
