My dog is nervous around new people and dogs. Is it anxiety? What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

My dog always gets nervous. When she is inside or around multiple humans or dog. For example today my brother brought over his two dogs and my dog growled at them and hid. Another example all my older brothers groomsmen where in our house and my dog whenever they went to pet her she ducked low to the ground thinking that they might hurt her. I always thought she had anxiety but now I’m not sure.

It certainly sounds like anxiety to me - it sounds like your dog is fearful around new people and dogs. I'd recommend talking to a behaviorist or trusted trainer about working on some behavior modification that could help your dog feel more confident in new situations. Ask your vet who they would recommend in your area.
