My dog is pregnant. Can she reabsorb puppies close to delivery?

Hello. It may be quite dangerous to abort at this late stage of pregnancy. Plus, many veterinarians will ethically not be comfortable doing so. The safest thing is to allow Sammie to have her puppies & once weaned, consider having her spayed to prevent any further unwanted litters. Unfortunately you can't tell if this is a real pregnancy or a false pregnancy without an ultrasound at this stage. At 22 days, the fetal heart beats can be detected on an ultrasound. At 45 days, the fetal skeletons can be seen on an x-ray. Depending on the size of the mother and the amount of puppies, the fetuses may be palpated in the final weeks of pregnancy. Otherwise she will have up to two litters of puppies a year. Not only is this a lot of strain on her body, but it contributes to pet over population. Thank you for more information on your dog and the situation. A dog's pregnancy lasts between 58-68 days. Spaying her is still possible, but it's up to the vet to decide if they want to do it or not. As I said, there are vets who do not like to spay pregnant dogs that are far along in their pregnancy. I would give local vet clinics a call to see they would be willing to spay her. Poor Gypsy. This could be due several things like a respiratory problem, eating something she shouldn't, all the hormones, a bacterial/viral infection, parasites and much more. Since she is pregnant, we have to be careful what medicines she gets put on. I would have your vet take a look at her to ensure all of the puppies are still okay. They will also be able to determine the problem and get her on the safest medications for her and the puppies. I hope this helps!

While male dogs typically do not become sexually mature until at least six to seven months of age, it could be possible that Gizzy is pregnant from this puppy if he became sexually mature early and she was in heat. If she did become pregnant in August, depending on when she mated, she would be pretty far along in her pregnancy (a dog's pregnancy is 58-68). I would have her seen by a vet first thing Monday to diagnose if she is pregnant or not.

That has not been reported to the best of my knowledge. Pyometra develops in response to certain hormonal stimulation that is not present during pregnancy. If Bugsy is showing symptoms like discharge from the vulva then I suggest you get her to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi, if she was pregnant and lactating it should be quite obvious by now because it would be the second half of her pregnancy. Unless she is just expecting 1-2 puppies then her abdomen would not be much different, however it is unusual to have 1-2 puppies only. Lactation could also occur with phantom pregnancy. In order for you to be sure, best to have her checked over, if she has puppies, your vet might be able to check them with the ultrasound and see if they have any major abnormalities. Hope this helps.
