My female dog is lactating. Could she be pregnant or is it phantom?

Hi, if she was pregnant and lactating it should be quite obvious by now because it would be the second half of her pregnancy. Unless she is just expecting 1-2 puppies then her abdomen would not be much different, however it is unusual to have 1-2 puppies only. Lactation could also occur with phantom pregnancy. In order for you to be sure, best to have her checked over, if she has puppies, your vet might be able to check them with the ultrasound and see if they have any major abnormalities. Hope this helps.

    She may only have one puppy which would not really show so well. Best take her to a vet for an x-ray or ultrasound to determine how many puppies she will have, and whether one needs to fear problems with giving birth. Single puppies often are very big and this could lead to dystocia, ie the puppy is too big to fit through the birth canal or the birth canal is too small for the puppy to fit through. It will also helpful to know how many puppies are to be expected ao you will know when she is done giving birth. Of course the exam can also determine whether she is pregnant or not.

    Unfortunately there is no way to be sure without taking Barney into the vet for an x-ray. I strongly urge you to do that if you think she’s pregnant, as pregnant dogs need regular veterinary care during their pregnancy. I would take her into a vet today for an exam. Best of luck.

Pregnant dogs have enlarged abdomen from about 5-6 week after the heat. Lactation can start 1-2 days before the labour - this usually does not happen in first pregnancy. If Tweet has normal size abdomen and she has been lactating for a few days now i would suspect phantom pregnancy. However, if you want to be sure if Tweet is pregnant or not, you will need to take her to your local vets for x-ray or ultrasound scan.

It's very unusual for a spayed female to suffer from a phantom pregnancy, i would strongly recommend to take her to the vet in order to get that checked, it may be a case of a remnant ovary or maybe it is an infection of the mammary glands.

I'm not sure what the photo is if, it is unclear. If Gracie was in heat recently and you are sure she is not pregnant, she is probably experiencing a false pregnancy. This can occur 3-8 weeks following the completion of a heat cycle. It is a self limiting issue and symptoms usually resolve within a few weeks. Your dog would have mammary development, lactation and often show nesting behavior. If you are not 100% sure about her being pregnant or not, an exam with your vet would be a good idea. Also, continue to monitor for indications if a uterine infection which could include a thick discharge from the vulva, vomiting, excessive thirst and lethargy.

Two months following her Heat cycle is the exact time you would see these symptoms as that coincides with the timing she would be close to giving birth if she were pregnant. Normal pregnancy lasts 9 weeks or 63 days. If you are sure she is not pregnant, than she is likely having a false pregnancy and the symptoms can last for a few weeks.

Most of the time, symptoms will resolve with in 2-3 weeks. However, this is likely to recur with subsequent heat cycles. If she is not going to be used for breeding, spaying her will prevent this in the future. If she is acting ill or her symptoms do not resolve, then she will need to see her veterinarian.
