My dog's lips are raw and sore. What home remedies can I use?

Poor guy! Your can try this: It won’t hurt him if he licks it off. However, if it’s not improving in 5 days or so, I would recommend that you schedule a recheck with your vet. I’m worried he may need antibiotics, as he may have a deep skin infection. If it continues to be a problem , a skin biopsy may be recommended. Thanks for asking PetCoach!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could have been due to a traumatic injury while playing. I think though that it would be a good idea to have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. The main reason is making sure that there is no other traumatic injury present that needs to be addressed. Otherwise, at least on the picture it looks fairly superficial so you can plan on applying a thin film of triple antibiotic twice daily until you see your veterinarian. Good luck!

It could be skin fold dermatitis, either bacterial or fungal. Until he gets to see the vet, you can try wiping it with a little hydrogen peroxide every day. You can also apply a little Neosporin, but he will probably lick it right off again.

Sometimes just wiping with a warm wet cloth and drying thoroughly once per day can help with a moist dermatitis. Otherwise, you’ll need to see your vet for an oral medication or a medication that is safe to be licked. Best wishes to you and Bentley.

It does look a little irritated there. That could be caused by irritation from a muzzle or face halter, or could be regular allergies starting up. I would recommend keeping the area clean and dry, for now. If it's not getting better after 3-5 days, I'd recommend a vet visit to see if she needs most medicated wipes. It's common for young dogs to get superficial bacterial infections around their lips, which usually doesn't require oral antibiotics, but may require a topical treatment. I hope that helps! Is there anything she could have chewed on to cause that inflammation in the corners, mainly electrical cords? It seems very raw and blistered but does not appear infected by that picture. All you can do is clean the area with soap and water as any other topicals will just get ingested. If it is not better in a day or so take her to your vet for an exam to see why it is not clearing

I'm so glad Jasper is home! It's also possible (aside from a thermal burn) that redness is a chemical burn, scabies or an allergic reaction. At home you can wash the lesion with soap once and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just the spot, try to keep soap out of his mouth and nose). Protect the area from licking or scratching and he may need to wear an elizabethan collar. Once it is dried, you can apply a dab of coconut oil once a day and rub it in well. If it doesn't start looking better within about a week or if it gets worse, have him examined by his veterinarian who may prescribe medications.
