My dog's lip is red and neck fur rubbed off. What can I apply?

That lesion is very irritated on Nana's poor little neck! Lesions like this can be related to trauma, a skin infection, the beginning of a hot spot or an infected cyst under the skin. I can't tell from the photo, but if it looks like bruising, then there is also a concern for a bleeding disorder and she needs to get to the vet right away. Assuming there is no bruising, I recommend to have the lesion examined by the veterinarian since it is so red. There are a few things you can do at home that may help until you get her into the vet. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You can wash the lesion with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash her whole body, just the spot). Protect the areas from licking or scratching. Poor guy! Your can try this: It won’t hurt him if he licks it off. However, if it’s not improving in 5 days or so, I would recommend that you schedule a recheck with your vet. I’m worried he may need antibiotics, as he may have a deep skin infection. If it continues to be a problem , a skin biopsy may be recommended. Thanks for asking PetCoach!

Dogs like Lou can be prone to irritation on their lips due to the heavy jowls and moisture. You can try applying a very think layer of coconut oil on the area and rubbing it in well once to twice daily. The only issue is that he may lick it off! If this does not cause it to look significantly improved within the next 5-7 days, I would recommend to make an appointment with his veterinarian who might recommend systemic medications. Hi there. Nova could have an abrasion from rubbing her face on something rough, or could have a mild allergy to something causing the redness. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jules. I recommend bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to help soothe his skin. If this does not improve the red areas, then he will need to see his veterinarian. In the meantime, do not allow him to lick the area. He should wear an E-collar if he is trying to do so. That red area could be many things from a superficial skin infection to allergies. At home you can wash the lesion daily with soap and rinse well. Once it is dried, you can apply a dab of coconut oil and rub it in well. Prevent him from licking the lesion by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Make sure he does not lick this as it can cause GI upset. If it is not improved within 7 days or if it gets worse at any point, have him examined. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any).
