My pug has raw, oozy skin with hair loss on his front legs. Vet?

Those spots on Pugsy could be several things including fleas (even if you don;t see them, they could be present), allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection or endocrine disease. Because these lesions are pretty wide spread, I recommend to have him examined as soon as the vet can get him in. Until then, there are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions once a day (not his whole body, just the lesions). A thorough examination would be recommended including a skin scrape to check for mange mites, a fungal culture to check for ringworm, and cytology to check for bacteria or yeast overgrowth. There are many different possible causes for skin problems that you describe, and many can be treated with a variety of medications but we need to do testing to determine the cause.

It could be a skin infection. You could soak his paw in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps. Otherwise, he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He may need an antibiotic and/or corticosteroid to help treat.

From the pictures, the skin appears red and inflamed. It does look like it is infected. While this may not be a true emergency, I would recommend getting in to see your veterinarian very soon. Pookie will need the area shaved and cleaned up. Your vet may prescribe an antibiotic for this as well depending. Until you can get to your vet, you can keep the area clean and dry and use a mild soap and water to clean the wound. If Pookie is licking it, you can put on ECollar on her to prevent licking.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem.
