My dog has a rash and won't eat. What home remedies can I try?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I cannot give a dose for Benadryl because I have not seen Doobie but I don't think you are giving him enough and often enough to help. If he has a rash, Benadryl may not be strong enough and he may also have a secondary infection and need antibiotics. Poor Riddick! Unfortunately, this looks like it is infected. You can try some benadryl and neosporin twice a day. See link below for benadryl dosing. I would not let him lick it. You can put a cone collar on him to prevent this. If he licks it, it will never heal. If you aren't seeing much improvement, I would have your vet take a look at him. The spots where the rashes are definitely fit with seasonal environmental allergies. They may not have been there before, but would not be due to the Benadryl. It's more likely that it's a progression of the allergies and a sign that the Benadryl is not working well. Dogs tend to not be helped by certain antihistamines, but may be helped better by others. Luckily there are a few alternatives that can be bought over the counter. I recommend calling you veterinarian and asking if they could suggest another antihistamine. As long as they have no other concerns with Riley, they should be happy to give you an alternative. If the second antihistamine doesn't work and you still notice the rash/itching, then he will likely need a recheck exam and stronger medication. One thing you can do for the rash and itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. If you have tried to benadryl with no success, then Mabel will need a stronger medication to help with the rash, such as a steroid. Those can only be gotten from a vet. Since you have tried home remedies without success and she is getting worse, she does need to see a vet. I would take her into a vet today, as being very itchy will be quite uncomfortable for her.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. Poor Snow! Her skin looks really reactive. I really think you should take Snow to your vet for an exam at your earliest convenience. She may need oral antibiotics or some anti-inflammatory medications. I don't think it is an emergency though. To me it looks like a contact dermatitis (allergy). Poison ivy is possible but it is actually pretty rare in dogs. Benadryl is fine to give but you need to make sure you are giving enough. Dogs take a MUCH higher dose than we do. The dose is 1mg/pound of body weight. For example, 25 pound dog should get one 25mg capsule/tablet. If she is 50 pounds, then 2 of the 25mg capsules. You can round up if needed as it is pretty safe to give. She can have that every 12 hours. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Brownie! Brownie could have hives from an allergic reaction or could have a skin infection. You could try 75 mg ( 3 tablets of 25mg) benadryl twice a day until your vet opens monday. I recommend you get him seen tomorrow at the latest. You may also want to try and take his temperature (place a digital thermometer in his butt until it beeps). Normal temperature in a dog is 99 to 102. If it is 103 or higher I would take him to a Vet today. Good luck!

If those things have not worked to ease the rash then Krunk may need stronger medications (i.e. steroids or immunomodulator drugs like Apoquel- highly recommended) from your vet. Food allergies typically develop over time and occur with pets that have been fed the same food for their entire life.
