My Pitbull has a worsening itchy rash after tumor surgery. What to do?

Hello, my female Pitbull has A terrible rash on her stomach and inner legs shortly after having her 4th Mast Cell Tumor removal. Her entire stomach and inner legs are covered in this rash, which long seems to be getting worse. She is currently on Benadyl and Pepsid. I tried taking her off the Pepsid for a week to see if it was an allergic reaction, with no luck. She is very itchy. Is there anything I can do to treat the rash, at home remedies as well as meds?

If you have tried to benadryl with no success, then Mabel will need a stronger medication to help with the rash, such as a steroid. Those can only be gotten from a vet. Since you have tried home remedies without success and she is getting worse, she does need to see a vet. I would take her into a vet today, as being very itchy will be quite uncomfortable for her.

I don't recommend bathing her everyday as it will dry out her skin. Bathing her once a week with a shampoo, like Epi-soothe, may help. It could be that she has allergies, fleas, mites, and/or a skin infection so she may need prescription medications to help treat. You could have your vet take a look at her to determine the cause and then determine the best way to treat. She may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid to help. You could also add Free Form Snip Tips to her diet to help keep her skin and coat healthy.

That looks like an allergic reaction of some kind. I would get her checked by your vet as soon as possible to determine what is causing it (anything from food to grass to contact with some substance, there are a lot of possibilities) and get her started on some medication to make her more comfortable and start healing.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Poor Skye. My guess is this is a severe allergic reaction as well as secondary bacterial infection of the skin. If ointments and benadryl are not helping, she will require stronger, oral medications, to control the inflammation and treat the infection. This will require a visit to the veterinarian. I would recommend this visit within the next 12-24 hours, given how uncomfortable this looks for Skye. In the meantime, you could try giving Skye a bath with a gentle aloe and oatmeal type of shampoo, just to give her some temporary relief, and hope to wash off any surface allergens that may be irritating her skin. Rinse off the shampoo thoroughly with lukewarm water afterwards, and pat dry (don't rub). I hope this helps, and your little girl is feeling better soon.

My pitbull has a spreading rash but isn't itching. What's the cause?

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Why does my pit bull have a recurring itchy rash and weepy sores?

Thanks for using PetCoach! This is pretty classic for good old allergies. Pit bulls are notorious for having environmental allergies. You can start by trying some Benedryl (see link below), omega 3 fatty acids (about 2,000 mg fish oil per day) and Duoxo Calm shampoo. My pitbull has a recurrent stomach rash. What could be causing it?

Oh that rash on Mia does look bad. It's time to see a vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing the rash such as allergies, fleas, or mites, and can treat her. I'd take her into a vet in the morning. Tonight, trying giving her an oatmeal bath to see if that helps temporarily soothe her skin. Best of luck.

My pitbull has a rash and is scratching. What can I do at home?

Those spots on Rey could be several things including fleas, allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection, ringworm (which humans can get) or endocrine disease. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions once a day (not her whole body, just the lesions). Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. If the lesions do not start improving within a week or if they are getting worse, have her examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My Pitbull has a dry, scabby belly rash. Is it serious with thyroid meds?

If the rash is not itchy, and she does not seem bothered by it, you are ok to wait a few weeks to see if the medications help or if it goes away on its own. If it is itchy, Baile may have allergic skin disease or a bacterial or fungal infection that needs to be treated by your veterinarian. Hope that helps!
