My dog has a rash around his mouth for weeks. What's causing it?

I am sorry to hear about your dog! If this is coming and going I would wonder if there is something he is occasionally getting into that he has an allergy to, such as a plant in your yard. Or perhaps he is getting a special treat/table scrap on the days he breaks out that he has an allergy to. I would recommend bringing him in during a flare up for his vet to examine him as we do worry when we have lesions develop along the edge of the nose about autoimmune disease, so he should be examined to ensure this isn't something that needs to be further investigated.

This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Dessy regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.

This is especially likely if Russell had started using a plastic food or water bowl in the last month. If so, switch back to ceramic or steel. This presentation could be due to a localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching (if any). It may be an allergy or an infection in the hair follicle. Make sure you are using stainless steel bowls and wash them daily. Keep the area clean with soap and water or use clearsil wipes in the area. You can apply cortisone cream to help and if this does. It show improvement then I would have a vet check the area

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Piper. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. Skin disease can be frustrating as many diseases can appear similar. Common cause of hair loss include mites, ringworm and allergies. An allergy can be to something in her diet, environment or even fleas. The veterinarian will examine her and ask questions about her lifestyle. Skin testing may be recommended. Based on these results, treatment can be started. I hope this information helps!

It does look a little irritated there. That could be caused by irritation from a muzzle or face halter, or could be regular allergies starting up. I would recommend keeping the area clean and dry, for now. If it's not getting better after 3-5 days, I'd recommend a vet visit to see if she needs most medicated wipes. It's common for young dogs to get superficial bacterial infections around their lips, which usually doesn't require oral antibiotics, but may require a topical treatment. I hope that helps!
