My German Shepherd has a raised sore on her front leg. What is it?

This may be a so-called hot spot, i.e. a spot where Nerys is constantly licking , first because it may have itched or hurt, then because it became a habit. The constant licking prevents it from healing. You will need to take Nerys to your vet for an exam. Your vet may inject some steroid under the lesion and put Nerys on a long course of antibiotics and she will need to wear an e-collar to keep her from licking. It is important that she be kept busy with walks, playing etc, as boredom makes it worse.

It may be an ulcerated growth from a pressure sore if he seems to lay on that side more. If there is a discharge then it is likely infected and will need antibiotics. Your vet can sample some cells and see if it is a growth or a pressure sore and advise if surgery is recommended in that area

If Nova is two years or younger, this could be a histiocytoma - a benign tumor that is usually on the front half of the body. They usually go away on their own without treatment. Unfortunately it is hard to tell what that lump is just by the picture. I would recommend you take her in to see your vet for an exam and potentially a fine needle aspirate of this lump. A fine needle aspirate is a way to try to exfoliate cells from the lump and look at them under the microscope to try to tell what this lump is. Even if it is a benign lump, she may need to have it removed if she continues to lick it. She also may need topical treatment or potentially antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatories if the lump is infected or causing her pain. I often recommend taking lumps off of legs sooner, as they are easier and generally less expensive to remove and close the skin when they are small. Large lumps on limbs can be quite difficult to remove, as there isn't much additional skin in this area to close over the wound.

The mass on the leg has the appearance of a histiocytoma which is a benign tumor that is common in young dogs. It will usually regress within a few weeks to a couple months. I would not be overly concerned unless it does not go away or if it starts to bother him. This could be a lick granuloma /hot spot. However, it is impossible to say without actually looking at the lesion. this could also be a little tumor or infection. Your boyfriend will need to keep the dog from licking the lesion and take Maxxy to a vet for an exam and treatment. If it is a lick granuloma, then the vet will prescribe antibiotics over a longer period of time, possibly inject the lesion with steroids and the dog will need to wear an e-collar until it is gone. Sometimes boredom can aggravate the licking.

IT should be fine to leave this until regular surgery hours - I would recommend bathing with saline and applying some dog-friendly antiseptic ointment to prevent infection and also applying a tick prevention product also if she walks in woodland or long grass just in case. If she develops a fever or lameness she should be seen more urgently
