My dog has a raised lump on its inner thigh. Is it an infection?

From the picture, I'm concerned that he may have a mass -- or it could be the way his skin hangs that looks like a mass. Either way, the area looks very irritated and would be suspicious of a superficial skin infection that is causing discomfort. I Would recommend getting him to a vet today for evaluation and starting on antibiotics if needed, or sampling the mass if there is indeed a mass within that area.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Thank you for the picture, that is more helpful. The lump doesn't look infected or like a wound, however these are still possible. The lump looks like it could be a bit of a blocked gland, a cyst, an abnormal wart, or a tumor is always possible as well as some tumors, especially Mast Cell tumors, can look like anything. I would recommend monitoring it for now, if it is bleeding, growing (or growing and shrinking), bothering Bogart (he is chewing/scratching at it), or if there is any discharge, then I would get it checked right away. Otherwise, I would wait a few weeks and see if it goes away on it's own. If it doesn't go away in a few weeks, then I would recommend having it removed by your vet and sent away for histopathology. Your vet might do an "FNA" (fine needle aspirate) prior to removing it to determine what it is. Best of luck with Bogart!

Hello, sorry to hear about Bear. Its difficult to tell exactly what that is without looking at the structure and what makes up the little nodule. That is, the cells forming the little nodule would need to be evaluated to tell exactly what that is. Given that it is a small area, it could be removed and submitted to biopsy to determine the cellular make up. Alternatively, you can monitor to see if the nodule resolves. If it goes away within a few days, then this is likely nothing of big concern. More severe things this could represent such as cancerous tumor can begin by looking like this. If this is indeed something more aggressive, then it may continue to grow and get worse. If so, then this should definitely be evaluated by their veterinarian. Please keep a close eye on this nodule, it should begin to improve within a few days, otherwise have your this further evaluated by your veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Looks like it could be a deep infection. These usually require antibiotics for a while to get them to go away. Possible it's a little mass as well. Hard to tell from the pictures. Recommend having it looked at. They might want to aspirate with a needle and see if they can tell what kind of cells are in it to try and make a diagnosis.

It could be a small cyst, pustule/papule, or possibly a Histiocytoma which is a benign mass that is common in young dogs. Since it is getting more red, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. The vet may want to aspirate it and examine the contents under a microscope. She may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, it may need to be removed, or just monitored (histiocytomas typically resolve with no treatment). You could use an over the counter spray, like Vetricyn, and see if that helps relieve any redness or discomfort.

It will not resolve without a long course of oral antibiotics. Now, that being said, this could be a primary issue or a secondary issue - I cannot tell you without examining her myself and doing some testing. This could just be a bite or spot that has caused a bit of allergic reaction in the skin. If it is an area of allergy or infection it will resolve with time. If it doesn't go away it is a mass in the skin, such tumours can be benign or cancerous but need to be tested to know.
