My puppy had a severe reaction to rabies shot. How long to watch?

Any time I have administered a vaccination and the animal then begins vomiting or exhibiting any other abnormal symptoms, I treat as a potential adverse vaccination reaction. I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian that performed the vaccination to have him examined and treated for a potential vaccination reaction. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Roy. Rabies is vaccination that is required by law and as you mentioned his lifestyle included exposure to wildlife. I would recommend that he has this vaccine at the veterinary hospital. He can be given an injection ahead of time to keep him from suffering the allergic reaction that he did last time. If Storm has Rabies in the infectious form (in salivary glands) he will show signs of Rabies with in 10 days regardless of receiving the vaccine. We just worry when giving the Rabies vaccine with in that 10 day window that if the dog has a reaction to the vaccine we may think it is Rabies when it isn't. The only way your husband could have gotten Rabies from Storm is if it was in his salivary glands. So if Storm is fine at day 10-14 your Husband will also be fine. I wish you the best!

This side effect is more common with the rabies vaccine than other vaccine, in most cases it resolves within 24-48 hours, as long as she is eating and walking she is fine to stay at home and just wait for it to get better soon.

If the symptom does not go away or worsens, then I would take her in to be seen if possible. Reactions are temporary and will eventually go away (either on their own or with the help of medication). Reactions can be quite severe sometimes so be on the lookout for severe facial swelling, hive development, extreme lethargy, vomiting, breathing difficulty, etc. and get her in to be seen by an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. Otherwise, if she is normal right now with none of the above symptoms, I would just monitor her after giving the Benadryl and see how she does. I hope this helps! I am so sorry but it sounds like your pet is having a moderate vaccine reaction. I would highly recommend taking her to an ER vet right away to have your puppy Bella evaluated and treated for a vaccine reaction. They will likely do steroids and anthistamine injection to help stabilize her condition. I really hope that your fur baby Bella is able to make a full and speedy recovery. She may be having a reaction to Rabies, so it is important to have her get pre-meds (from your vet) before her next yearly to help prevent this in the future. Best wishes and take care!

Chief may be having a vaccine reaction or may just be having pain from the vaccine. I recommend to call your veterinarian and let them know what is happening. They may ask to see him again or they may have you give him an antihistamine. I hope he feels better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.
