My dog had an allergic reaction to rabies shot. Can he get another?

It sounds like she could have had a vaccine reaction as they typically happen soon after being administeted the vaccine. Your vet will likely want to give her injections or steroids and diphenhydramine, and may keep an eye on her to make sure the swelling goes down. In the future she may need pre-medication prior to being vaccinated to avoid another reaction.

He will be fine in the long term but it is possible for him to have a reaction the vaccine such as swelling or redness or vomiting or diarrhea. The best thing to do is check the records and make sure they are under the correct owner and animal name at the vet because sometimes they can have 2 files of the same animal under different owners ( yours and your parents) and not realize they are the same. From there ask them to adjust the reminds so you only have him being due in 1-3 years from now based on your areas laws

Hello, and thanks for your question. I'm wondering if the rabies vaccine product or protocol is a bit different in India vs the United States. Our typical protocol with a previously vaccinated (up-to-date) dog who may have been exposed to a rabid animal (such as a wild animal or unvaccinated dog) is to booster the dog immediately with another rabies vaccine - just once....and then get back on the standard vaccine schedule of every 3 years. We don't typically do the multi-dose PEP you're describing, although that protocol would be given to people with exposure. However, rabies is much more endemic in your area - so I would defer to the advice of your local vet who treats far more rabies exposure cases than we would. If the original plan (prior to your dog's second altercation with another stray) was to give the two additional shots on the 4th and 5th, then I would probably stick with this plan. All vaccines can carry a small risk of reaction - but there's no "overdose" per say. And any risk of vaccine reaction is negligible compared to the risk of actual rabies exposure, in a rabies endemic area. So it is always best to err on the side of protection from rabies. Then I recommend asking the veterinarian for a letter stating that it is unsafe for him to receive the rabies vaccine in the future due to his severe reaction. Your pet will likely be fine as long as Scooby does not have an vaccine allergy issues. Many vets will try to get dogs on a schedule so that all vaccines are done at once (so clients don’t have to come in multiple times). Oh no. Poor guy. It looks like he is having a superficial pyoderma ("hot spot") reaction to his skin following the injection, and maybe even a bit of cellulitis. You will need to unfortunately take Lucky back to the vet to get this treated with oral antibiotics, and also oral pet friendly anti-inflammatory medication. The topicals aren't going to be enough to help this resolve. You can clean the area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to keep it clean. You should definitely also keep the e-collar on him until this has resolved or at least until it is no longer bothering him. I am sorry your fur baby had such a bad reaction and hope that this can be avoided in the future. Best wishes and take care!

It will not be dangerous for them, in fact I recommend making sure they are up to date on all vaccinations. Even if that means getting them again. It will only protect them! I will say any dog can have a reaction, so just monitor for signs of swelling of any part of the body, difficulty breathing or excessive vomiting. These reactions are rare but can happen.
