My puppy bit me. Is rabies observation still needed after vaccination?

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | 2 months and 26 days old | 20 lbs

Hi. My boyfriend got bitten by our 3 months old rottie pup. By the time he got bitten, our pup wasn't vaccinated yet. A few days after the bite, we brought our pup to a veterinary clinic to get his anti-rabies vaccine. I did my research and according to it, I need to observe my dog within 10-14 days to figure out whether he is expose or not. But how can I do that if he was already vaccinated?

If Storm has Rabies in the infectious form (in salivary glands) he will show signs of Rabies with in 10 days regardless of receiving the vaccine. We just worry when giving the Rabies vaccine with in that 10 day window that if the dog has a reaction to the vaccine we may think it is Rabies when it isn't. The only way your husband could have gotten Rabies from Storm is if it was in his salivary glands. So if Storm is fine at day 10-14 your Husband will also be fine.

Hi there. In the United States, it would be very unlikely for a young puppy like this to have rabies. So try not to worry too much, as this is probably not an issue.

The reason for the 10 day observation period is that if your pup had such advanced rabies that he was shedding the virus in his saliva at the time of the bite, he would rapidly develop neurologic signs and die within just a few days. So if your pup is alive and acting normal after 10 days, no need to worry :)

The vaccine protects him from getting rabies if he would happen to be exposed in the future - it would not have any effect at all on a current infection if he already had the disease, so the 10 day observation period is the same regardless.

But you should contact your local health department and talk to a human physician. If Austin has Rabies in the transmissible form (in the salivary glands) then he will show neurologic signs for rabies with in 10 days. Keep him quarantined for 10 days. If he dies from any cause he should be tested for Rabies if it is before the 10 days quarantine. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Any bite from an unvaccinated animal puts you at risk for Rabies. Getting antibodies from the mother's milk is not enough protection. If the puppy has been indoors and not bitten by an unvaccinated animal it is VERY unlikely that it has Rabies. IF Dachie has Rabies he will die or show symptoms with in 10 days, if that happens you should seek immediate rabies treatment. You should be fine to wait the 10 days. Isolate and quarantine the puppy. It is good you have had the Rabies vaccine and you are likely protected but everyone's immune system is different. If you were bitten by a rabid animal you would be treated regardless of your own vaccine history but it is less involved. Have all your dogs Rabies vaccinated when age appropriate. My unvaccinated stray dog bit me 10 days ago. Do I need rabies shots?

There is a usually a 10 day quarantine period after an animal breaks the skin of a person. If the animal has rabies in it's saliva - it show signs of rabies within 10 days. This doesn't not mean that the animal doesn't have rabies- just that it couldn't have transmitted it at the time of the bite. Rabies can have a long incubation period. Rabies should be taken very seriously because it is a fatal virus. I would recommend getting Tofy vaccinated as soon as possible. I would recommend consulting with a local veterinarian on what happened and have an exam done on Tofy. They can give you the necessary information. If a vaccinated dog bit me, what's my rabies risk of contracting it?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If the dog is up to date on its rabies vaccinations, the chance of you contracting rabies is incredibly low. What we recommend is to quarantine the dog who bit you (or have the owner of the dog quarantine it) for 10 days and monitor the dog for the development of any abnormal neurologic signs. If the dog is completely normal after 10 days from the time you were bit, you are in the clear. If the dog becomes sick at all in that time frame, or if you become sick at all, I recommend contacting your doctor. I hope this is helpful - best of luck!

You just want to keep an eye on him and not expose him to anything that will make him get sick in the 10 day window that may confuse if he has Rabies or something else. Hello. If Bella received a proper vaccination from her veterinarian, then there is no need to worry at all about your sister getting rabies. If the vaccine was not properly administered by a licensed veterinarian, the Bella might be able to be quarantined as required by your local municipality. Here in the US, an unvaccinated dog is quarantined at a holding facility ( often a veterinary facility ) for 10 days. If no symptoms, then no need to worry. Correct - if a dog is still alive and not showing any neurologic symptoms 10 days after a bite incident, then you can be certain that it was not carrying rabies in its salivary glands at the time of the bite.
