My dog is in discomfort after rabies vaccine. Is this a normal reaction?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

My dog was given a three years rabies shot for the first time, she normally gets 1 Year shots. About several hours after her shot she started to squeal when pet or picked up. At this point (approximately 7 hours later) she appears to be in a lot of discomfort, shaking, can’t be picked up, or lay down properly. She has been able to pee outside and walk on her own. I’m concerned and can tell she’s in pain however are unsure the severity of what she’s experiencing. I don’t want her im discomfort

This side effect is more common with the rabies vaccine than other vaccine, in most cases it resolves within 24-48 hours, as long as she is eating and walking she is fine to stay at home and just wait for it to get better soon.

My dog is limping after his rabies shot. Is this a normal reaction?

Not entirely normal but sometimes pain at the injection site can occur. Is he limping on the leg the vaccine was given in? If not, then no. If yes, then maybe. Do you feel anything at the site of injection? Best plan is to call your vet so they can make a note in his record that this occurred and discuss with you if pain medication is needed. If the limp is in a different leg then something else is likely causing the limp which require an exam with your vet. Why is my dog lethargic and sad after his rabies shot and moving?

Sometimes vaccines can cause dogs to feel a bit groggy, a bit like a person getting their inoculations. However it doesn't tend to be that pronounced. Dogs are very sensitive to new environments and stress so so wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it is down to the changes occurring. Whilst he is eating and drinking normally I wouldn't worry too much. However if he deteriorates or dies not return to his usual self in a few days it would be best to get him examined.

My dog is still sick and vomiting after rabies vaccine and vet care?

If she vomited 6 times last night than you need to call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to see your dog again today for a recheck. She might need subcutaneous fluids again and/or an anti-vomiting medications. Hope our dog feels better soon!

Chief may be having a vaccine reaction or may just be having pain from the vaccine. I recommend to call your veterinarian and let them know what is happening. This is absolutely no problem. We often vaccinate against rabies more often when dogs need to travel abroad and need to show a particularly high vaccination titer. It is a normal side effect that your dog is a bit tired after the vaccination.

My puppy had a severe reaction to rabies shot. How long to watch?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bo. How scary! I recommend monitoring him closely for 24 hours. Then I recommend asking the veterinarian for a letter stating that it is unsafe for him to receive the rabies vaccine in the future due to his severe reaction. He will likely react again with future immunizations. Good luck!
