My dog bit vet, unvaccinated, quarantined. When can I get her back?

You just want to keep an eye on him and not expose him to anything that will make him get sick in the 10 day window that may confuse if he has Rabies or something else. This is because of the Rabies virus which is fatal and can be transmitted to humans. a dog with rabies can only infect others once the virus has reached the brain and salivary gland, from this point on the dog will die within 10 days. the purpose of the quarantine is to make sure your dog survives the 10 days, if he doesn't then the people he has bitten need to have a series of vaccinations/serum against rabies in order to survive.

If the vaccine was not properly administered by a licensed veterinarian, the Bella might be able to be quarantined as required by your local municipality. There is a usually a 10 day quarantine period after an animal breaks the skin of a person. If the animal has rabies in it's saliva - it show signs of rabies within 10 days. This doesn't not mean that the animal doesn't have rabies- just that it couldn't have transmitted it at the time of the bite. Rabies can have a long incubation period. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In retrospect you should have had the bat tested. That would have been the best way to know. If your country is Rabies free then the bat likely doesn't have Rabies either. I would trust your countries health officials on this. The bat would have had to get it's saliva in to your dog via a bit or her mucous membranes (gums, eyes, cut on skin). In the US an unvaccinated pet that may be exposed to rabies is quarantined for 6 months because that is the maximum amount of time it can take for rabies to become contagious or obvious. It can happen sooner. Rabies is only contagious when it is in the final stages, in the salivary glands. Once it is in the salivary glands the animal will show signs of rabies with in 10 days. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If the dog is up to date on its rabies vaccinations, the chance of you contracting rabies is incredibly low. What we recommend is to quarantine the dog who bit you (or have the owner of the dog quarantine it) for 10 days and monitor the dog for the development of any abnormal neurologic signs. If the dog is completely normal after 10 days from the time you were bit, you are in the clear. If the dog becomes sick at all in that time frame, or if you become sick at all, I recommend contacting your doctor. I hope this is helpful - best of luck!
