Dog with pyometra: why brown vomit, black stool, and swollen belly?

Your poor pup! If she isn't spayed, I would be very concerned that she has a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and it would cause a white discharge as well as vomiting. It sounds like your vet may have been suspicious she had a pyometra and tried treating it medically with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Unfortunately the medical route often isn't successful, and surgery is needed to treat it. This means spaying her. I would take her back into the vet immediately, as this is a medical emergency. I'm sorry Chutki has a pyometra. She won't get her another heat while having a pyometra. Unfortunately medical treatment of a pyometra frequently does not work, and surgery is the best option for her. It sounds like the treatment isn't working if she still has a discharge 15 days later, and this infection likely will get worse and can kill her if not treated correctly. I would strongly recommend getting her the surgery. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Assie! Where is she bleeding from? Her vulva? Bleeding and purulent discharge from the vulva is common in an open pyometra, that means the infection is draining though an open cervix. The draining doesn't indicate that she is improving or will get better it just means that the cervix is open. There are 2 types of pyometras: 1) open and 2) closed. Closed are very serious because the uterus can get very big and rupture. I highly recommend having Assie spayed. Pyometras are life threatening. If you are not planning on breeding her I would proceed with removing her uterus. I would contact your Vet when they open and discuss the discharge and bleeding and see if they want to change their course of action. I hope this helps and I wish Assie the very best!

Hello. The blood in the vomit could be an indication that Candy is developing thrombocytopenia secondary to the infection. Or, she could be going into DIC or Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation. This almost always occurs secondary to some underlying cause, & it results in leakage of vascular tissues. So again, she is very sick & needs attention immediately. It's a little difficult to see for certain in the picture, but I do see a fluid filled structure in the photo near the urinary bladder that certainly could be the uterus. In your final picture the discharge on the ground does not look what I would typically expect from vaginitis. You may want to get a third opinion from a veterinarian if you're concerned about going forward with surgery. If it is a uterine infection it is unlikely to clear with antibiotics alone and even if it does the infection returns with the next heat cycle, so I typically recommend surgery whenever I am concerned about a pyometra.

I would be very concerned about Bubbles, and take her into a vet immediately. I see that she isn't spayed, which means she can develop a life threatening infection of the uterus called a pyometra. A pyometra is fatal without treatment, and it causes vomiting, weakness, and lethargy, all signs she is showing. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain if she has one or not, but because of the seriousness of a pyometra I would take her into vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. No, that is not normal. She should be put on broad spectrum antibiotics. There may be an infection in the uterine tissue that is remaining in the abdomen (stump pyometra). A second surgery may be needed to remove the infective tissue. The bloodwork shows a high white blood cell count indicating infection. Some of her liver enzymes are mildly elevated but I don't think they are significant at this time. She needs to be evaluated for a stump pyometra.
