Dog's pyometra discharge worsened after dose change. Increase meds?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 18 lbs

Hello, my 12 y/o dog was diagnosed with open pyometra Monday. Our vet prescribed 34mg of Baytril, given 2x daily. Friday, her discharge had lightened to about a quarter-sized output every 6 hours, so the dose was decreased to half (17mg 2x daily) on Saturday. We took her for a light, 15 min walk, gave a bath, and later that night noticed the discharge output is now palm-sized. Could this be from the walk/bath/lighter dose? Should we go back to 34mg 2x daily until our vet opens Mon? Thank you.

I would increase the antibiotics back to a higher dose is able and consider having her spayed as this can cure her the fastest. Antibiotics alone typically do not work for a cure but simply manage the problem

Hello, sorry other about Lee. That is indeed a low dose for a Baytril prescription. I would double check with your veterinarian about the dose as perhaps it was intended to be given twice daily. Clavamox could also be administered to treat an infection either on its own or in combination with the Baytril. PGF2 Alpha is not an antibiotic and may help rid the fluid within the uterus but will not treat an infection. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My dog's UTI discharge increased on antibiotics. Is this normal?

Hello, sorry to hear about Ashlee. If she is having worsening discharge, I would actually be concerned that her antibiotics are not working. If her signs do not improve then you should have her urine tested again by your veterinarian to determine if the antibiotic she is currently on is adequate for her infection. Why is my dog still discharging and not eating after pyometra surgery?

No, that is not normal. She should be put on broad spectrum antibiotics. There may be an infection in the uterine tissue that is remaining in the abdomen (stump pyometra). A second surgery may be needed to remove the infective tissue. The bloodwork shows a high white blood cell count indicating infection. Some of her liver enzymes are mildly elevated but I don't think they are significant at this time. She needs to be evaluated for a stump pyometra. My dog has smelly discharge 4 days after pyometra spay. Is it normal?

I am assuming she is on an antibiotic. if not, then your vet should start her on an antibiotic. If she is on an antibiotic then you should call your vet as he/she may want to change antibiotics. After 4 days, I would expect any discharge to be decreasing.

My dog is on Enrofloxacin for pyometra. When will she feel better?

Most of the dogs will improve within 24hrs from starting the antibiotics. However, pyometra is a serious, debilitating disease and many dogs will not get back to normal (despite antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications) until they get spayed. If Ella has been on antibiotics for longer than 48hrs and she has not made any improvement, you should get her checked by your local vets again.

Unfortunately if pyometra persists despite antibiotics, it is best to proceed surgically by removing the uterus. The antibiotics are not working because possibly there is a resistant infection or your vet did not give the right antibiotic. Unfortunately a lot of these type of infections do not resolve without surgery. Can I treat my dog's pyometra with medication instead of surgery?

Antibiotics can be used, but they don't always cure a pyometra. The best treatment is surgery. If Narly cannot have surgery and she has cancer, it may be best to let her go peacefully. Pyometras make the dog extremely sick, and you do not want her to suffer if she cannot have surgery. There is no guarantee antibiotics will even help. I would speak to her vet about possibly letting her go if she can't have surgery. I am sorry.
