My cat's pyometra pus returned after antibiotics. What's wrong?

Poor kitty. The picture you have posted does show pus (infection) discharge from her vaginal area. This is likely pus coming from her uterus. Antibiotics alone unfortunately won't cure her of her pyometra infection. There is a stronger medication that has been tried and successful in a few cases of pyometra that you can get prescribed by your veterinarian but it also isn't cheap. The medication also isn't a guarantee. Surgical removal of the ovaries is the only wayt to guarantee success when dealing with a pyometra. I can understand your financial restraints here. Hi Maleeka! I'm sorry to hear that Mira has had these ongoing issues. It is uncommon to have a recurrent stump pyometra. At this point, other issues should be considered, such as an ovarian remnant syndrome (a portion of an ovary remained after a spay or was present in an abnormal location), contact with any human hormone creams/ointments, or resistance to the antibiotics being used. A 5 day course of amoxicillin is not likely to treat this type of issue. At this point, I strongly recommend taking Mira back to her vet for further evaluation, including a physical exam, blood testing (primarily to check her white blood cells), and possibly another surgery. She may need to have biopsy and culture samples taken of the uterine stump. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

No, that is not normal. She should be put on broad spectrum antibiotics. There may be an infection in the uterine tissue that is remaining in the abdomen (stump pyometra). A second surgery may be needed to remove the infective tissue. The bloodwork shows a high white blood cell count indicating infection. Some of her liver enzymes are mildly elevated but I don't think they are significant at this time. She needs to be evaluated for a stump pyometra. I would increase the antibiotics back to a higher dose is able and consider having her spayed as this can cure her the fastest. Antibiotics alone typically do not work for a cure but simply manage the problem

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Pussy Cat! I recommend having him rechecked as soon as possible. My worry is that the bite wound is now a closed abscess and needs to be lanced so it can drain. Antibiotics have a hard time penetrating a puss filled pocket. I would not recommend waiting a week.
