My puppy has pyoderma in his armpits. Safe home remedies or vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13 lbs

I adopted my puppy about a month ago and on the chart I received it said he had a case of pyoderma but it had been healed it has recently come back in his armpits and is making him very uncomfortable. I’ve been reading about home remedies such as hydrogen peroxide, and chlorexidine, but I’m afraid to try anything without making sure it’s safe for him, I can’t really afford the vet right now but will go if I need to. Are there any safe and effective home remedies or should I make a vet visit?

Oatmeal baths and shampoos can soothe irritable skin and tea tree shampoos are naturally antiseptic. If however the area becomes wet or crusty it should be checked by a vet to rule out infections or mites

I always find it useful to try to cover the area to help reduce the trauma to the skin when it is scratched. You may want to outfit Panda with a t-shirt that covers the armpits and then just cut out the front part or tie it a little bit so he doesn't pee on it. I would also try an over the counter oatmeal shampoo and wash him with that. If there is no improvement still in a couple of days, I'd bring him to see his veterinarian. He may need prescription strength topical medications to treat the skin, and even oral medications to help.

My puppy has a skin infection. Is it puppy pyoderma? How to treat?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Thanks for the pictures. It appears as though Sparky may have a bacterial skin infection, or puppy pyoderma. A lot of times puppy pyoderma resolves on it's own. If it gets worse than this I would recommend taking Sparky to the Vet to be evaluated and prescribed oral antibiotics. My puppy has impetigo. How do I treat puppy skin infection at home?

Impetigo in puppies is also known as puppy pyoderma. It is usually a self-limiting process and will go away without any treatment. To help it go a away a little faster, you can gently clean the area with a dog shampoo that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. I like the DermaPet products, such as DermaPet Benzoyl Peroxide Plus Shampoo and follow the directions on the label. If it starts to spread or doesn't seem better in 3-5 days, you may take Riri to the vet for diagnosis.

What home remedies can I use for my puppy's fungal skin infection?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This sounds like a focal infection. You can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

My dog has pyoderma. Should I use meds or just medicated baths?

Pyoderma usually needs antibiotic oral treatment if it is located in more than one place, if it is in one specific place an antibiotic ointment might be enough. bathing can also help but only with a special medicated shampoo.
