My dog has a wet, itchy armpit rash. How do I dry it and reduce itching?

Allergies, bacterial, fungal, or mite infections can all be possible causes. You can try the medicated shampoo again to see if it helps this time around. If it doesn't help much or if it worsens, I would recommend Oscar see his veterinarian for an exam and further evaluation. He may need antibiotics or other medications as needed.

It's very possible that your Pet may have a type of mange and/or secondary bacterial infection. You'll want to visit your local Veterinarian and request a skin scraping to rule out the presence of any mite or mange. Be sure to wash your hands before and after touching your pet and wash any bedding in very hot water regularly.

Dogs can get dry patches on their skin from infections, allergic dermatitis, etc. You could bathe him with a moisturizing shampoo, like HyLyt, and see if that helps. If not, he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and prescribe medications to treat.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What you are seeing appears to be a rash that could be secondary to chafing. In a young active dog chafing can be common from high activity due to the friction leading to the redness and inflammation that you are seeing currently. I typically recommend using a spray such as malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the area until resolved. This spray will have a steroid in it to reduce inflammation and redness. It also has an antibacterial component to it so that if there is a secondary bacterial infection in this area it will help treat that. To help prevent future episodes, I typically recommend applying a greasy ointment in the armpit area such as Biobalm. This is a product that you can find online quite easily. I hope this helps! It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. You can use chlorhexidine based pads to clean the affected area. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

I would also consider bathing with a shampoo such as Douxo PS Calm shampoo, which can be found online quite easily and bathe twice weekly until resolved. Oatmeal baths and shampoos can soothe irritable skin and tea tree shampoos are naturally antiseptic. If however the area becomes wet or crusty it should be checked by a vet to rule out infections or mites
