My dog has pyoderma. Should I use meds or just medicated baths?

The fastest way to recovery is to apply the oral medication and sprays just exactly as your veterinarian prescribed. This will take time. The skin needs to heal, there is no way to speed it up beyond the body's ability to heal.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Thanks for the pictures. It appears as though Sparky may have a bacterial skin infection, or puppy pyoderma. A lot of times puppy pyoderma resolves on it's own. If it gets worse than this I would recommend taking Sparky to the Vet to be evaluated and prescribed oral antibiotics. Oatmeal baths and shampoos can soothe irritable skin and tea tree shampoos are naturally antiseptic. If however the area becomes wet or crusty it should be checked by a vet to rule out infections or mites

Yes, but I prefer cephalexin or cefpodoxime for skin infection. The amoxicillin dose for a dog 40lbs would be about 200mg every 12 hours. I would recommend seeing a vet though for appropriate antibiotic therapy recommendations. Topical therapy should also be considered. I typically recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved. I also recommend using welactin omega 3 fish oil and essential 6 spot on by dermoscent. Malacetic conditioning spray is also a good option to spray isolated areas on the body where infection is present. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
