My 4-month-old Golden Retriever puppy stinks. How often to bathe?

I typically recommend bathing no more than once every week or every 2 weeks unless there is a skin condition requiring frequent medicated baths. If Luna’s skin is not becoming dried out or irritated the frequency of bathing and the type of shampoo you are using is probably fine. If Luna is itchy, her skin is red or flakey, or if she has an unusual odor, she may have a skin condition. If this is the case she needs to have an examination done by your veterinarian to address her skin issues. This could just be a normal "dog" smell and he may need a bath. Make sure you use a puppy shampoo. Also some dogs will express their anal glands (2 glands one on each side of anus that help to lubricste bowel movements) if they get nervous or if they are full and smell really bad. Your vet clinic should be able to express these for you. Also dogs that have yeast or bacterial infections in the ears or skin could also be the reason for the odor so if the bath or anal glands expression doesn't help then I would have your vet do an exam to make sure there isn't an infection somewhere. Hi there and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is true that over bathing may cause dryness and can be irritating to the skin. However, sometimes dogs with skin allergies and bathed very frequently and it actually helps them. So you may need to monitor Bear and see if frequent bathing causes any dryness or redness to his skin. There are several products on the market that are more like dry shampoo or mousse that you could brush through Bear's coat to eliminate some of the dirt and odor. If necessary you can also bathe Bear every one to two weeks, but please do it less frequently if you notice any dryness or redness of the skin related to bathing.

I would recommend bathing him every 2-4 weeks as needed to prevent overdrying of the skin. An oatmeal based puppy shampoo is great to use. Then in between baths you can use puppy wipes which are found at your local pet store. This works wel to my overdry your pet but also keep him smelling fresh. : ) I hope this helps!

Aw Snoopy is adorable! Yes you can bathe him but I would use something very gentle like a puppy shampoo. I do not recommend using a flea shampoo as these can sometimes be too strong for puppies. You can bathe him every 2-3 weeks unless he gets really muddy/stinky and needs a bath otherwise. I hope this helps!

Is Bobby on flea and tick prevention? If not I would recommend it. I would recommend bathing him when he gets all dirty. Typically we don't recommend bathing dogs more than once a month unless medically necessary but if he continues to get dirty you may need to. I would recommend trying to walk him on a leash so he stops rolling in the dirt. If he is that itchy I recommend a vet visit to address the underlying cause.
