Can I bathe my 8-week-old puppy, and how often should I do it?

8 weeks old is the minimum age to begin bathing a puppy. Use a pet approved shampoo for puppies sensitive skin. She can be bathed every 6-8 weeks. You can use plain, unscented baby wipes or pet wipes to spot clean her in between baths. If you bathe her at night, dry her thoroughly and keep her war to prevent chill. It is best to bath her early in the day so she has ample time to dry off and doesn't go to sleep damp.

Yes you can bathe your pets using a puppy shampoo only. They can regulate their body temperature by week 2. And you should start vaccinating them when they are 6-8 weeks of age, but typically we start at 8 weeks. Hello, yes it is ok to bathe your puppy however, please use warm water and make sure she is thoroughly dry after her bath. Some flea shampoos may be ok for puppies this young, you should find the recommended age for the shampoo you are trying to use on the bottle itself. Most often, if you puppy has fleas, it is most safe to bathe with plain water and shampoo. Most of the time, you won't need flea shampoo. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I typically recommend bathing no more than once every week or every 2 weeks unless there is a skin condition requiring frequent medicated baths. If Luna’s skin is not becoming dried out or irritated the frequency of bathing and the type of shampoo you are using is probably fine. If Luna is itchy, her skin is red or flakey, or if she has an unusual odor, she may have a skin condition. If this is the case she needs to have an examination done by your veterinarian to address her skin issues. As long as Luna is doing well at home, eating and drinking well and seems overall healthy, it should be perfectly fine to give her a bath. I would use a mild puppy or dog shampoo. At 5 weeks of age your puppy should still be with its mother, nursing occassionally and eating puppy chow. At 6-8 weeks she can be completely weaned and on puppy food only. I would recommend a large breed puppy food from Hills, Royal Canin, or Purina. You should check her weight regularly and feed her the amount listed on the back of the bag that is appropriate for her weight. The amount to be fed can vary greatly between brands so a general amount can’t be given. As far as bathing goes, you can bathe her with a gentle shampoo, like aloe and oatmeal, once every 2 weeks or so. Just be sure she is nice and dry before she goes outside in the colder temperatures.
