Puppy partially delivered for over an hour, is this an emergency?

When a dog is having active contractions, and it's been more than four hours since the last puppy came and you believe there are more, this is a medical emergency, and Daisy has to see a vet right away. This is not normal, and there could be a puppy stuck in her birth canal. Please take her into a vet now, she needs immediate medical attention.

Yes I would be concerned about River. While it is normal to see a greenish discharge after puppies are born, having it before puppies can indicate premature separation of the placenta. It's also concerning that two hours have passed since this sac broke and there is no sign of puppies. Boston Terriers frequently have problems giving birth and often require c sections to give birth safely. River needs veterinary attention now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Oh goodness. Dark green discharge can absolutely indicate fetal distress. Bulldogs rarely have their puppies without c-section. This could be a life threatening situation for Angel and her puppies. Please have her seen by a veterinarian immediately. Be prepared for a recommendation for a c-section. I recommend an ultrasoun as soon as possible in order to determine if there are puppies present and if they are still alive, Normal labour and delivery is triggered in part by hormones secreted from the puppies and if there is only a single pup, or if the pups have died before delivery then this may not happed and a section may be required in order to remove them, Survival is very poor beyond 5 days overdue but the risk of infection and reduced fertlity in the future increases dramatically over time

Hello. As long as she is not actively pushing / straining & seems content to care for her new family, she may just need to rest for several hours. It is also not unusual for there to be a 24 hour gap between starting labor & delivering the last puppy. I will tell you that sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between an involuting uterus ( one that is shrinking down ) & the perception that there may be still some puppies. The uterus can be quite "lumpy" at this early stage. If she remains comfortable & there is no excessive drainage ( there will be the normal greenish discharge called lochia ), then I would not be too concerned. But if you are still concerned in 3-4 hours, or she starts pushing with no deliveries after 30 minutes, do see your veterinarian for further evaluation. It is very likely that she will if you feel like she has more. If nothing happens after 4 hours from the birth of the last one a check up at your local veterinarian is needed as there may be a case of dystocia and medical or surgical intervention may be needed. Hello, sorry to hear about Maggie. 2 days of contractions is a lot and Maggie is likely to be very tired from this. Therefore, I would recommend having Maggie evaluated by her veterinarian rule out any primary causes for her abnormal delivery and contractions.
