Dog contracting for hours after last puppy. Is it an emergency?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 60 lbs

My dog has had 9 puppies and her last one was around 5. She is still contracting and acting like there is more coming. So it's been around 4 hours since her last one. I was just concerned if this is normal behavior or if something has gone wrong during birth?

When a dog is having active contractions, and it's been more than four hours since the last puppy came and you believe there are more, this is a medical emergency, and Daisy has to see a vet right away. This is not normal, and there could be a puppy stuck in her birth canal. Please take her into a vet now, she needs immediate medical attention.
