My dog has had contractions for 2 days. Is this normal or emergency?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Tara. I would recommend bringing her in to your vet for examination. If your vet has an ultrasound machine they can use it to check the puppies and ensure they are doing ok/ are not in distress. What concerns me is it sounded like she was going into labor a few days ago, and normally dogs labor will progress and not stop. I would be concerned she is not going through a normal labor, and if she seems lethargic today that is even more concerning. I would get her in to ensure her safety and that of her puppies. Poor Angel! If she's been having contractions for several hours and has not produced any puppies yet, something is definitely wrong. The puppies may be too large to be born naturally, or one may be stuck in an awkward position in the birth canal. I would recommend taking her to the vet right away to be checked, as she may need an emergency c-section.

If it has been 2 days since the last puppy was born and you think there are more, she needs to see a Vet immediately to confirm that. She likely needs a C-section to get the remaining puppy(ies) out. I strongly recommend you have her assesssed by a vet as these signs are all very suggestive that labour should have begun and she may have a pup that is stuck and unable to deliver naturally. A physical exam and possibly ultrasound or xray may be required to assess the position of the pup and if she is in fact dilated and ready to deliver. I would not delay the appointment as there is an increased risk of infection and fetal distress once the passage is open and any mucus or fluid is passed

A good rule of thumb is that if you are seeing black or green discharge, then that is considered abnormal and she should be seen by your vet right away. Her whining sounds a little concerning as well, especially if she is doing it continuously and seems to be in distress. A vet visit sounds like a good option for her @ this point. Stage one labor (where the dog is restless and pants) can last for 12-24 hours. This phase ends when the first pup moves into the birth canal. At this point, she will begin actively delivering the puppies. I hope this information helps!

Yes I would be concerned about River. While it is normal to see a greenish discharge after puppies are born, having it before puppies can indicate premature separation of the placenta. It's also concerning that two hours have passed since this sac broke and there is no sign of puppies. Boston Terriers frequently have problems giving birth and often require c sections to give birth safely. River needs veterinary attention now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies.
