My pug's eye wrinkles are hairless and crusty. Is it an infection?

It is very common for pugs to get buildup in the creases on the face. If you notice redness, discharge, a foul odor or he paws at his face, I would recommend being seen by a veterinarian. Occasionally they can get an infection in those folds and require treatment with antibiotics. Otherwise, it is a good idea to keep these areas clean. It is not unusual for pugs, frenchies and bull dogs to get a facial fold dermatitis. Moisture builds up in the wrinkles and an infection can occur. There are wipes you can get to to wipe the affected areas. I like Mal-a-ket wipes or Douxo chlorhex wipes. Your Vet should carry them Good luck!

I assume you are talking about the redness and swelling around the face. This is commonly seen when they get a skin infection. You can try a couple of things at home to help this, but it's best to have a veterinarian evaluate Riley in order to assess the condition more thoroughly, because there may be some other condition causing this. 1) Wash the area with cool water and a medicated shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day. Use a cloth and gently wipe away any crusts. Do not scrub, because it will irritate the skin more. It's OK if all of the crusts do not come off in each washing. 2) Make sure the area is completely dry after washing. You should start seeing good results within a week after starting this. It may take a few weeks before it's completely cleared. If two weeks go by and it's not getting any better, then I recommend having a veterinarian exam it. Great question! I would recommend an antibacterial wash over a cream daily. The most important step is getting those crevices dry after. Any remaining moisture will cause a breeding ground for the yeast and bacteria. I would recommend this daily. Talk to your vet about antibacterial wipes (different companies make different medicated wipes). You could also try a small amount of baby powder in the crevices to help dry the area. A thorough examination would be recommended including a skin scrape to check for mange mites, a fungal culture to check for ringworm, and cytology to check for bacteria or yeast overgrowth. There are many different possible causes for skin problems that you describe, and many can be treated with a variety of medications but we need to do testing to determine the cause.
