My pug has a dry, scab-like spot in his face fold. Vet or home care?

A photo may be helpful. Face wrinkles in Pugs can become infected pretty easily. Ideally, take her to your vet for an exam. She may need oral antibiotics or a topical prescription medication. It may help keep it at bay in the future if you use some medicated wipes to gently clean her face and skin folds. Hello. Thanks for using PetCoach. Great question! Pugs get yeast build up in those folds. What you are smelling is the yeast. You need to use medicated wipes to combat this. This is called facial fold dermatitis and is very common in dogs with wrinkly faces. It is likely due to underlying allergy and yes Benedryl is safe to give. https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl I do not recommend putting anything over the counter in the folds. However, I do recommend gently wiping out the crease with a baby wipe once or twice daily. Even more importantly is getting air to the folds. After you wipe, blow in the fold or hold it open to the air for 30 seconds to make sure it’s completely dry. If those measure are not improving things in a week- or if there is worsening in any way- it’s time to see he vet for some prescription strength help (medicated wipes +\- stronger allergy medication). First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Those spots on Pugsy could be several things including fleas (even if you don;t see them, they could be present), allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection or endocrine disease. Because these lesions are pretty wide spread, I recommend to have him examined as soon as the vet can get him in. Until then, there are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions once a day (not his whole body, just the lesions). Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can see how the skin is red in the folds on his face under the left eye. It is not unusual for pugs, frenchies and bull dogs to get a facial fold dermatitis. Moisture builds up in the wrinkles and an infection can occur. There are wipes you can get to to wipe the affected areas. I like Mal-a-ket wipes or Douxo chlorhex wipes. Your Vet should carry them Good luck!
