My dog took 22.5mg prednisone instead of 12.5mg. Is she okay?

A 10mg tablet for a 48lb (0.48mg/lb) dog would not be expected to create any complications (dosages as high as 4mg/lb are used in emergency and severe cases). She may have an increased thirst but otherwise is unlikely to have any ill effects. Continue to monitor just in case, any vomiting/diarrhea/bloody stool should be reported to your vet

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In my professional opinion, this is a much higher dose than what I would use. I normally do not exceed 60mg daily regardless of the size of the dog just because of the potential side effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding as well as the undesirable side effects you describe. I recommend you bring up your concerns to the prescribing veterinarian who knows the case well, to taper his dose down slowly. It is important to not discontinue or lower too much this medication acutely as problems can arise with this approach. For now, look for any evidence of gastrointestinal bleeding such as black, tarry stools. If observed, let your veterinarian know right away. Good luck with your boy!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! So an anti-inflammatory dose of steroid would be about 8.5 mg and an immune modulating dose would be about 17mg. So you have given a very high dose of steroid and not sure why you gave this to Dixie. You should always consult a veterinarian before treating your own pet for this reason. Probably one dose this high won't hurt but steroids have some very potent effects and side effects on the body. I would monitor her for any signs of illness like vomiting, diarrhea (both with or without blood), lethargy, decreased appetite, etc. If these develop I would call your veterinarian and discuss what is going on. You will see an increased thirst, increased urination, increased appetite, increased panting, and possibly some behavioral changes. Watch her closely and always consult with your vet before medicating your own pet.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My fist recommendation would be to call the vet to double check because amoxicillin has a very broad dose range. This is a little bit higher dose than I usually use but may be exactly what your vet wanted. (I would do about 2 cc’s twice daily for most patients her size.) There is not much harm in higher dosing, other than an increased risk of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea so don’t worry about poisoning Lupita. Twice daily dosing for the amoxicillin is definitely correct as this drug needs to be in the bloodstream for a sustained time to work properly. The prednisone dose is fine. Long-term administration of *any* medication will have pros and cons, but in my opinion if the prednisone is keeping Sasha comfortable, she can definitely stay on it long-term. Side effects and concerns associated with prednisone are all dose-dependent, and Sasha's dose of 5mg every other day is an extremely low and safe dose. I would be very comfortable keeping her at this dose long-term, and would not expect any harm to come from it. We have a long list of conditions that are treated with prednisone, and I have many patients who must be on prednisone for life. These patients tend to do great, often on MUCH higher doses than Sasha is receiving. As long as your vet is comfortable with you keeping her on prednisone, go for it! Hope this helps!
