My dog got prednisone late. Can I still give the evening dose?

It is best to give the next dose at his regularly scheduled time unless the dose you just gave was very close to it. 8-10 hours apart should be fine to get him back on his regular medical schedule. If he has any issues, or if you are concerned about the meds you are giving, it is best to speak with his treating veterinarian for more information.

The answer to your question really depends on when the injection was given, what type of steroid it was, what dose of steroid was given and what his Prednisone regimen has been, so your vet will need to answer that question. If your vet is already closed for the day, it will likely be safer to skip his Prednisone dose tonight and call them first thing in the morning to discuss when to resume his Prednisone. Some steroid injections only last for 12 hours, but some last for much longer, so you do not want Chester to have too high of a steroid dose tonight. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. All of those medications would be ideal to be given as soon as you can rather then waiting until tonight to "try again". If she was due for all three this morning, I would recommend to try again mid-day. Tramadol can be given every 6-8hours to make her comfortable so try to get that into her as soon as you can. Prednisone and clavamox should be given with food or directly after a meal. I would recommend to feed her some lunch and then try to give those meds again after the meal. Maybe with a treat, cheese, pill pocket. If you are able to get either one of those meds into her this afternoon, then skip the evening dose and resume in early morning. The sooner the better.

You can give a dose now an then match the next dose for the same time 12 hours later (ie: 9am/9pm). And then tomorrow go back to the 7am/7pm schedule if that is what works best for you. Dosing should be at least 8 hours apart. Hope this answers your question. Best wishes.

Steroids can have some side effects, but typically help quite a bit with GI disease. The drug can cause increased thirst with a subsequent increase in urination. This can lead to accidents in the house. Most dogs will have an increased appetite and pant more than usual. Some can gain weight and have changes to the hair and skin. Liver values can become elevated with longterm use. Rarely, I will see a patient become aggressive with steroids. There can be drug interactions with other medications as well so be sure to check with his doctor before giving any other medications or supplements. I hope this information helps!

No, there isn't such a thing as giving them too early or too late, but I'd give them to Teddy at times that are convenient to you so he gets each dose at the same time each day. I'd also give them with food. I hope this helps.

I would probably go ahead and give the dose now - the timing usually isn't critical for this medication. If you are giving any other medications at the same time the recommendation might be different since omeprazole might change the absorption of some other medications.
