How much amoxicillin for a chihuahua after pyometra surgery?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My fist recommendation would be to call the vet to double check because amoxicillin has a very broad dose range. This is a little bit higher dose than I usually use but may be exactly what your vet wanted. (I would do about 2 cc’s twice daily for most patients her size.) There is not much harm in higher dosing, other than an increased risk of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea so don’t worry about poisoning Lupita. Twice daily dosing for the amoxicillin is definitely correct as this drug needs to be in the bloodstream for a sustained time to work properly. The prednisone dose is fine. Hello, sorry other about Lee. That is indeed a low dose for a Baytril prescription. I would double check with your veterinarian about the dose as perhaps it was intended to be given twice daily. Clavamox could also be administered to treat an infection either on its own or in combination with the Baytril. PGF2 Alpha is not an antibiotic and may help rid the fluid within the uterus but will not treat an infection. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Yes, but I prefer cephalexin or cefpodoxime for skin infection. The amoxicillin dose for a dog 40lbs would be about 200mg every 12 hours. I would recommend seeing a vet though for appropriate antibiotic therapy recommendations. Topical therapy should also be considered. I typically recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved. I also recommend using welactin omega 3 fish oil and essential 6 spot on by dermoscent. Malacetic conditioning spray is also a good option to spray isolated areas on the body where infection is present. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid have both been commonly and safely used in cats for decades. This is a normal first line treatment and accurate dose for a mild skin inflammation or infection. If the incision area becomes red, swells rapidly, or begins to drain excessive fluid, or she begins to act differently- such as lethargic or uninterested in food, that would warrant a recheck with your veterinarian. At this time, her incision does not appear red and the scabbing appears quite dry and non-inflamed, so I am not overly concerned. I hope this helps. Often antibiotics are given once to twice daily depending on which antibiotic was prescribed. If you do not see a label with the written prescription, you should call your veterinarian to a prescription. First off, I'm so sorry that Piper had complications during her surgery! Complications can happen, and if the bowels needed to be relocated to find the bleed, it does make sense to put her on a course of antibiotics to be safe. If her bowels were perforated, the vet would have told you about that complication, so it's more than likely she was prescribed the antibiotics as a precautionary measure. I'd be careful comparing how humans and dogs are dose in medications because dogs require different doses of drugs and may be given them for longer durations.
