My dog's popped cyst: Should I cover the wound or leave it alone?

Potentially it could heal, but keep in mind that the cyst will likely grow back because the cyst sac has not been removed. So this could be a continuing problem when it heals, fills up again, and then opens. While the best thing to do is have it removed, you can hold off to see if it fills up again. Clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. It looks like a cyst has ruptured. I don't think it needs stitches. It should heal OK, however, the cyst may form again. If that happens, you should probably have it surgically removed before it ruptures again. Sebaceous cyst will often fill with thick material and often you are able to pop or express the material from the cyst. As long as it is not painful, inflamed, or has bloody or purulent discharge there's no need to take Brennan immediately to the vet. The cyst will likely fill up again, they usually will not completely go away without surgical removal of the entire system lining. But as long as it's not bothering him and is not becoming infected, often times monitoring is all you need to do. You've cleaned Chulo's cyst already, you don't need to clean it daily. That will interrupt the healing process. Leave it be for now. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. From the pictures, it does appear that this is a sizable hole. Unfortunately, when dealing with cancer cells, anytime a cancerous mass is removed this is a possible complication. Flushing the area may help this heal faster or this may not heal well at all due to the cancerous nature of the area. I would say that if this is not looking like it is developing healthy tissue within a week of flushing and caring for the open wound, I would recommend having this closed with stitches again. I would have the veterinarian check the wound every 3 days to monitor it's progression. This area is hard to bandage and most likely a bandage would not stay in place in this area. I would leave this exposed to the air so it heals better. When she goes to sleep at night, I would put a shirt around her or a pair of boxer shorts to keep it protected. I hope this helps! Things like this can be an enlarged pore that has accumulated a wax ball or sometimes a cyst that has dried up and the body has blocked off. Generally these pets will be fine. Wash the area gently with soap and rinse it well. Gently pat it dry. Make sure Stella does not lick at it as this can make it inflamed and prone to infection. Look at it daily for any signs of redness, swelling or discharge. If these are seen, take her to the veterinarian. Generally these lesions will fill in and don’t require you to apply any treatment. I would recommend just leaving this alone and making sure he is not able to lick this area. It does not appear infected to me based on the photo, however if you are noticing redness or swelling around the wound or if there is discharge you should see a veterinarian. I would definitely recommend checking in with your veterinarian when they are open to make sure there is nothing else they would recommend for Reese.
