My dog's cyst popped. How to care for it and prevent infection?

The best way to clean a mass that ruptures is with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water or with Chlorhexidine solution 3% diluted. You can leave it open like this, it will likely heal on its own. However, over time it will probably fill again, if it was a cyst. If this happens you may have to have it removed. Do not put ointment on it, generally leave it alone. It may be a good idea to cut away the hair around it to avoid hair to get into the wound.

My own dog has several of the same lesions. Yes, they can become infected but typically if that happens the infection is localized and resolves without intervention as long as you can prevent Fifi from licking, chewing or scratching the area. A few of the cysts were becoming more of a problem so I had Lori's removed. If Fifi's cysts continue to bleed or become infected, discuss removal with your veterinarian. If the cysts are small enough, removal can be done with a sedative and local pain block. Try not to worry, Fido should be fine. Apply an E-collar of needed to keep her from traumatizing the area.

Suturing it closed may allow much faster healing than leaving it open. Otherwise be sure to keep it clean and dry. You can use an antiseptic like betadine or chlorhexidine once to clean it. Be sure to dilute cleaner then rinse well. Use just today or if the wound gets extremely dirty. Using daily can actually slow healing. Keep the area clean and dry. I recommend Ares stay primarily indoors until it is closed as he could get a maggot infestation of flies lay eggs on the wound. Using hydrotherapy or gentle water from a hose is a good way to keep it clean. If there is swelling, discharge or pain, Ares needs to see a vet for medications. I hope he heals quickly.

So this could be a continuing problem when it heals, fills up again, and then opens. While the best thing to do is have it removed, you can hold off to see if it fills up again.
