My dog has a pink sore in his nose. Is it serious? What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 74 lbs

He has had this pink spot / sore I his nose for a few days, I've put vitamin E on it, but it's still there. Is it just from having a dry nose? Is it serious? Anything I should put on it? It's just inside his nose. Vet didn't seem worried about it but I'm just not sure.

The most common reason that we will see a small raw area on the inside of the nostril is due to irritation of some type. That can be something as simple as a scratch from a stick or toy that will take some time to heal. I typically do not recommend applying anything to the area because it can make dogs try to lick or rub the area more which can make it take longer to heal. If your vet has examined it and is not concerned, then I would just recommend monitoring it. I would expect that it will slowly resolve as long as Otis is not continuing to irritate it. If it does not resolve in a couple of weeks or appears to be enlarging, then I would certainly have your veterinarian examine it again.

My 7-month-old dog has a red sore on his nose. Should I worry?

While this may be caused by a bite from another dog, from my experience, this looks a little bit more like a wound from nudging something constantly with the nose. Perhaps nudging a door to a crate, or sticking his nose under a door repeatedly. I recommend keeping a close eye on the area, and maybe even getting Bear an E-collar or "cone" so that he does not cause further trauma to the area. I advise against applying antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin as Bear is likely to lick them off quickly. I hope this helps and that all is well with Bear!

Poor Max. This type of sore is common from rubbing his nose on a cage door, carpet, dog beds, etc. I would put some neosporin on it twice a day and rub it in. If it isn’t improving, I would have your vet look at it. Your vet will be able to see if he need some oral antibiotics or other meds to help it heal. I hope this helps!

It’s possible that this is a localized skin infection with some deeper swelling and involvement. That would be called a pyoderma and these lesions can be superficial or even a little deeper. This could be a primary skin problem or secondary to trauma, abrasion, allergies, exposure to ectoparasites (fleas/ticks), or even a tumor. I would advise anything lasting more than a few days to a week and not getting better, would need an exam by your veterinarian to assess. Hopefully this resolves over the next few days but if it’s not getting smaller/better, I would advise Tiger seeing your veterinarian. Thank you and good luck!

Hello. This can be several things. She may have picked up a bacterial infection while rooting around in the soil. This could also be some kind of allergic reaction or possibly even an immune-mediated response. You should have your veterinarian check this out as the right diagnosis will led to the correct treatment ( if anything is necessary ), especially if it is getting worse. My dog has a red weeping sore near his nostril but acts normal. What to do?

Thank you for posting the picture. It is really helpful. This lesion could be many things, and an examination with a veterinarian would be the first step toward a diagnosis and treatment plan. In my experience lesions such as this one in a young dog are usually either a histiocytoma, eosinophilic furunculosis, or ringworm. All of these can pop up quickly, and they are all treated differently. A histiocytoma is a benign tumor that will usually resolve within 4-6 weeks. The others need medications. A veterinarian can do a needle aspirate to help make the diagnosis and determine what the best treatment plan should be. Best of luck and I hope Tank improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Why is my dog licking a new spot on his nose? Is it serious?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could also be just a severe infection. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. I recommend you have Ace evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!
