My dog's lip is bright pink and won't eat after daycare. What's wrong?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching. Poor guy. He may have been bitten by an insect and is having an allergic reaction. If he doesn't seem to be bothered by it, I would just monitor it for now to see if this resolves on its own. If it does seem to bother him or doesn't resolve then its best to take him to your vet for treatment. Antihistamines and allergy medication will likely be prescribed. This redness could be related to seasonal allergies as well, and it's possible that Dakota has a secondary skin infection. Mites or even fungal disease could cause symptoms like this as well. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian to see if they think antibiotics or other medications may be necessary.

Poor guy. Yes this does seem to be a localized reaction and it could be to just about anything that has been newly introduced or even something Mork got into that he is having an allergic reaction to. I wouldn’t suspect this is caused by brushing his teeth too hard because this is his lip area that looks irritated. It’s best to visit your vet for some medication to help combat this reaction, especially if this area is bothering him and not improving on its own within a few days. Swollen lips can be a sign of many things including a bug or spider bite, an allergic reaction, an injury or an infection. It's best to play it safe and have Timmy examined by the veterinarian. Do not let Timmy further traumatize the area by chewing on toys. You may also try applying a cool (not cold) compress. I hope this helps.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. This should not be causing him to not eat well as you describe so I am suspicious that there is something else going on like a gastrointestinal condition which may be affecting his appetite. Your veterinarian would be able to check on this. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

She may require testing to rule out ringworm and mites. If it is determined that it is not an infection, then I would consider a food allergy or an autoimmune disease.
