Why is my dog's face pink, eyes red, and she's throwing up?

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Regarding the vomiting, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. If the pinkness is on the outside of the eye (the skin around eye) and is puffy this could be the start of an allergic reaction to something in the environment, an insect bite or sting, or even a vaccine if any given in the last 24 hours. If this is the case you may notice the swelling progressing and in that case Bella Bear should see a veterinarian right away for injectable medication to help. If the redness is on the outside of the eye itself (the sclera or whites of the eye) this could be due to something irritating that had gotten into the eye or as part of an allergy to something in the environment. If this is the case I would prevent her from rubbing her eyes and you can flush with sterile saline or a lubricating over the counter drop such as genteal. If the pinkness persists or worsens I would have her evaluated by a veterinarian to see if there is a prescription ointment that may help. I don't think this has anything to do with the baby possum.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bella! How old is Bella? I would not want to to give her vaccines if she is vomiting after she eats. If she vomits EVERY TIME she eats then that is concerning. Causes for vomiting are: intestinal parasites, pyometra (infected uterus which is a surgical emergency), foreign body (something is stuck requiring surgery), dietary indiscretion (ate something gross that is upsetting her stomach), food allergy or intolerance, toxin ingestion, Kidney or liver problems, cancer. Without seeing pictures of her eyes it's hard to say what is going on. Red eyes can be from allergies or an infection but it also could be from glaucoma, a corneal ulcer, uveitis or even be from something internal going on. I highly recommend taking Bella to the Vet for an exam and to discuss all that is going on with her. I hope this helps and I wish Bella the very best!

A swollen face, swollen lips, red eyes, severe itching or difficulty breathing may all be symptoms of a vaccine reaction. An antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), can be given but only under the advice of your veterinary. Legally, we are prohibited from recommending you medicate her in the absence of a physical exam and a VPCR (veterinarian-patient-client relationship). If her symptoms persist or worsen, have her examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.

I would advise that you have her seen today if the vomiting persists, worsens, or other signs develop. Not sure if the vomiting is related to the allergic reaction but it could be. I would withhold food and water for at least 12 hours and let her stomach/intestinal tract settle down. She can have ice cubes to lick on every few hours is there is no vomiting. Then after a short fast give her a few tablespoons of water and wait for one hour. If she hasn't vomited, then start feeding her really small meals about 1-2 tablespoons every few hours throughout the next 12 hours after the fast. You can try to give the Benadryl but if that makes her vomit, then hold off until her stomach settles down. Again, if the vomiting persists, you will have to have her seen today. For this to arise suddenly, I would be suspicious of a reaction to a medication, something she ate, or something that was applied to her skin. It could also indicate an infection within the body that is causing inflammation to the blood vessels of the skin. If this has been going on for a while (months), then I would be more suspicious of secondary skin infections from allergies, or a disease condition that is lowering the immune system. Either way, I think this condition is concerning enough to warrant veterinary treatment. It's not an emergency, but best to schedule an appointment with your vet in the next day or two. They will help find the cause of this and at-least give her some relief and help keep the condition from getting worse. One thing you can do to help relieve the skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. She could have allergies if her skin is turning pink and she might need an anti-histamine and/or a corticosteroid to help treat. If she is itching her rear end on the floor then she might need her anal glands expressed. The vomiting may have been caused by eating something that upset her stomach since it only happened once and seems to have resolved. Monitor her for additional signs and have her seen on Monday. If she becomes very lethargic then she needs to be seen sooner. You could buy a thermometer and take a rectal temperature to see if she does have a fever. A dog's body temperature is higher than ours and normal can be up to 102.5 degrees.
