My dog is scooting, hot, vomiting, and has pink skin. What's wrong?

Oh my. It is possible she has an intestinal parasites that is causing this. The puking is due to nausea, but I am not sure why she is also foaming, as this isn't commonly seen in pets, unless they have a severe viral infection. I would get her stool tested through your vet to start, and then get her nausea treated with a prescription through your vet as well. Tapeworms are a common cause for itching around the rear end, and are typically easily seen in the stool. They look like tiny white rice or fried rice when they are dried up. Keep an eye out for these, since these are often not seen on fecal exam due to the large size of the worm. Another possible cause for her licking and scooting her rear end is that her anal glands are full. Every dog has anal glands that are 2 sacs located at 5 and 7 o'clock position just inside the rectum. These can get full in some pets because they are not expressed when they defecate, or after the pet has a bout of loose stool. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Regarding the vomiting, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. Red skin usually indicates inflammation of the skin, but can also be seen with hyperthermia (excessively hot) and infections in the blood stream. If the skin was suddenly red, then I would be concerned about infection or hyperthermia. Hyperthermia can happen to a dog exposed to a hot environment, or if they ate certain plants (hops, marijuana, etc.) or drugs. If the skin has been red for a few days, then it's likely inflamed from something she had contact with or the environment. However, they usually don't act anxious with this condition, so it's likely that something else is happening. It's best to have a vet check her as soon as possible to see if it's a serious condition. For this to arise suddenly, I would be suspicious of a reaction to a medication, something she ate, or something that was applied to her skin. It could also indicate an infection within the body that is causing inflammation to the blood vessels of the skin. If this has been going on for a while (months), then I would be more suspicious of secondary skin infections from allergies, or a disease condition that is lowering the immune system. Either way, I think this condition is concerning enough to warrant veterinary treatment. It's not an emergency, but best to schedule an appointment with your vet in the next day or two. They will help find the cause of this and at-least give her some relief and help keep the condition from getting worse. One thing you can do to help relieve the skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. Charlotte has hives all over her and is likely experiencing an allergic reaction. Likely the vomiting and diarrhea are all part of the reaction. Sometimes we never know the cause, but insect or spider bites are common. The mainstay of treatment are antihistamines and steroids. Likely she should be put on metronidazole for her diarrhea as well. I would call your Vet back and ask to have her seen today. She will be miserable until Thursday and may have more vomiting or diarrhea. I hope this helps and I wish Charlotte a speedy recovery!

It does appear to an reaction. The best thing you can do is give her a cool bath to help alleviate some inflammation in her skin. You can try an over the counter antihistamine to help with the redness but it is unlikely to help with itching if it bothers her. If it continues to spread or you notice any swelling or she is scratching the places, then she will likely need to be seen for stronger medication such as steriods
