What if my dog has a pimple-like bump on the hairy part of his nose?

There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Ouch! That is a concerning sign, especially since the bump is a different color from the regular skin, and is growing in size. Since it's hard to tell what a bump is without an exam and sample (biopsy, fine needle aspirate), it's best to bring Coco into your vet to have it looked at. They can take the sample, check what kind of growth it is, and safely remove it if needed. In the meantime, keeping an eye on how fast it's growing/size, and keeping Coco from pawing at it or rubbing it can help keep it from getting infected or more irritated.

This could be from an insect bite or a wound. I would clean it with a damp cloth and then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. Give it a few days to see if it's drying up and healing. If it's getting bigger then I would take Pierce in for a veterinary exam. It could be a mass but it's more likely a small area of infected skin and it will heal in a week or so. I would not be concerned about this. It looks to be either a papilloma wart or a histiocytoma (benign tumor) both of which are common in young dogs. Usually these things will go away on their own within 4 to 8 weeks. If it gets larger in that a time frame or by 8 weeks it has not gone away then he should see your vet. Hope this helps. This looks like a mild skin infection or irritation from an insect bite or injury. You can wash it with antibacterial soap, rinse it well and then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. As long as there are no other spots this should heal fine. The overlying skin may come off and then the pinker skin may be showing until the fur grows back in which could take a month or so. This is a skin growth and I order to get rid of it, Duke would have to have surgery to remove it. You can talk to your veterinarian about scheduling it. A lesion like that could be several things including an ingrown hair, allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection or a skin tumor/mass. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesion once a day (not her whole body, just the lesion). Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. If the lesion does not start improving within a week or if it is getting worse, have her examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
