My dog has a pimple or cyst by its nose. What is it and how to treat?

There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. This could be from an insect bite or a wound. I would clean it with a damp cloth and then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. Give it a few days to see if it's drying up and healing. If it's getting bigger then I would take Pierce in for a veterinary exam. It could be a mass but it's more likely a small area of infected skin and it will heal in a week or so. If Gabbana doesn't seem bothered by the spot you may just want to keep an eye on it for now. However if the area is itchy, changing in size or appearance rapidly, bleeds or oozes discharge, or is just bothersome to your pup, having a vet take a look at it is best. Keeping Gabbana from scratching or pawing at it with the use of an Elizabethan (cone) collar may also help it heal and prevent further injury.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is very hard to say without seeing Safire. It sounds like it could be a cyst (a large pimple). It is common for them to fill and burst. I recommend showing it to your vet at your next visit. They will stick a needle in it and look at the cells under the microscope to determine.
