My dog has a red, pus-filled bump near his nostril. What's wrong?

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. This looks like she had an infected area under the skin (an abscess) that has ruptured to the surface. That is good as the infection will drain. Clean the area with antibacterial soap, rinse well and you can apply a thin film of antibiotic ointment. It should heal in a few days. This could be from an insect bite or a wound. I would clean it with a damp cloth and then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. Give it a few days to see if it's drying up and healing. If it's getting bigger then I would take Pierce in for a veterinary exam. It could be a mass but it's more likely a small area of infected skin and it will heal in a week or so. This lesion you describe could potentially be something like an abscess for example. However, other things are possible. I recommend that you have Leah evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If an abscess was noted, further local therapy with drainage and antibiotics would be recommended. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A lot of skin bumps and lumps can look the same. She could have hit her nose on something and the bump is related to trauma and will go away, it could be a benign growth (like a histiocytoma), it could be part of a skin infection or immune reaction, hives or a cancerous growth. If the bump doesn't resolve in a few days I recommend having your Vet look at it. The sores around her mouth can also be due to infection or an immune condition and may or may not be related to the new bump on her nose. I hope this helps and I wish Luna a speedy recovery!

From the picture it actually looks more like a deep skin infection to me. This could be bacterial or fungal, or even a hypersensitivity reaction (less likely). I would recommend that she be examined by your veterinarian soon. They may look at a sample under the microscope to help determine what therapies might be most helpful.
